As a backup in a race, has anybody run a 26inch tube in a 29 inch wheel?

Obviously lighter and smaller to carry. Read this sometime ago in Ride but need a view from those with experience.

You can but only as a last resort, you need to stretch the hell out of the tube to get it to fit. As a temporary solution me and a mate have made it work before but personally I wouldn't trust it as my spare. Rather use the correct tube and be sure

When I do "ghetto tubeless" conversions, I stretch a 20" BMX tube over a 26" rim.

Some really simplified guestimating tells me that the 20" tube has to increase it's circumference by 30% to get on a 26" rim.

For a 26" time to stretch over a 29" rim the increase would only be about 12%.

So according to my highly advanced mathematical formula, and by virtue of the fact that I never went to school, I say YES, as 26" tube should be quite alright on a 29" rim as a spare.

PS. Graves podiumed at Worlds on a bike running ghetto tubeless... so there must be some merit in that vs rim strips!

I've had to do it due on a previous occasion and it tore the valve out of three different tubes on a single Oak Valley ride, won't go there again.

For a grand saving of about 27.2 grams I would just not have the bite of the Panini you're about to have...... It will save you any potential heart ache and maybe even heart burn!

Can be done, not recommended if weight is all you are worried about.
