Hmm interesting. I took Prexum Plus and Zanidip for about 5 years after I had a fall and blood pressure went haywire.

I stopped taking them about 18 months ago. I just found that they were having lousy side effects. My GP checks the BP on a regular basis and never panics. I don't think its stellar but the meds are also lousy things. I am 49, a pork pie or three ahead this winter and certainly the least fit I have been for a long time (ask me about the Spring Classic yesterday) but i will be back in fighting trim again in three months so exercise can do wonders.

You don't always need the meds, and they do have side effects after a bit.IMHO.

its such an emotional subject and we all panic when we hear BP and Cholesterol mentioned and dive for the meds as if we are going to keel over instantly. Don't think you cannot stop and don't think that they don't need to be adjusted.

Sure, but I think one should never risk it without a doctors authority first.

I have a simple outlook on life, if my doctor needs some heavy engineering, he comes to see me and I trust he takes my advice as I know more about it than him, if I need medical info I go see my Doc, and I take his advice because I accept he knows more about it than me.

Its pretty much served me well. :)

PLEASE HUBBERS, WHAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY DOING IS LIKE A BACK YARD MECHANIC WORKING ON A CRITICAL PART OF YOUR FERRARI. Please have the same passion for your cardiovascular health/condition as you have for your two wheeler.

The dynamics of blood pressure and heart rate during rest and increased physical activity are very complex. This is the "timing system" and "rev counter" of your engine. Get it evaluated and tested by a professional who knows a little bit more than what an ideal resting blood pressure is. Taking beta blockers to decrease your heart rate because you are struggling is looking for trouble. You are only putting a "rev limiter" on your engine. A proper graded exercise test to sub- or even maximum capacity will provide valuable information on what type of stress levels you can place on your cardiovascular system. Current studies even propagate the compulsory monitoring of cardiovascular recovery (0-5min post exercise) to determine the condition of the system. You might have ideal figures at rest, but something completly different and dangerous when active. The opposite is also true. Sudden cardiac death is a reality among athletes. Be critical about the advice you get and especially the meds you use. There are even anecdotal evidence that certain cholesterol medications have an adverse effect on tendon and ligament structures. The medications have usually been developed for sedentary people with a problem, and not high revving machines that need a bit of fine tuning. BE SAFE (no pain no gain is a myth).

Well I guess it depends. If you are a recreational cyclist then I can't see a problem. The Doc prescribed those meds for a reason. Normally they see you a week after to see if the pill did work and all that and follow up. He probably saw you where cycling for fun (your Hub name "Vetseun" ), hence pre-scribed the best meds on the market for you.

In any case any advantage gained would be minimal at our level.

At that stage I was racing at provincial level.Obviously it didnt help, Malcolm Lange and co still kicked my ass. Today I enjoy cycling and results are not important
