I know there is a route the guys swim from the pier across to what I think is an old harbour area. Are there permanent bouys out there and how long is the swim across and back? If the water is warm enough, I don’t have a wetsuit, maybe I’ll give it a go. I’ve done lots of pool swimming but not any sea swims, maybe this is the opportunity to get out there.

Every Friday late afternoon the Ironman people meet and swim from Pier ..... maybe try and join the group - safety in numbers... try contact Fabes on here - he will probably best be able to advise you on where to swim.. My hubby used to swim at the Herbert Hurd school pool early mornings when training for Ironman but that was with a training group so don't know if they would just allow one to swim alone - maybe contact school and ask them.

My daughter is actively involved with EP swimming and they have been using St George's school pool until Newton Park is repaired. It is also heated and indoors. Why not give the school a shout and ask if they make it available to individuals.

We are heading in to summer, there are also outdoor public pools in Westering and St George's park itself. They will be opening soon.

The bouys are always there - you can swim from the pier to the main harbour wall and back - not sure exactly the distance on the full route - about 1.5 - 2k one way.

If you are unsure on the route - just drop in at the beach managers office and ask.

Try North End Lake. You might grow extra arms and legs though, but it might help with the swimming :P

Geez my toes are curling just reading this... hahahaha

St Georges pool - next to the cricket ground, behind the art Gallery.

Alternately you can swim in the Swartkops river - swim against the tide....

You don't want to do that anymore :(

mmmm.... I remember landing up in the lake a few times during IB racing events in the early 90's.... explains why I ride solo on a tandem.

If you swim from the Pier to Humewood/6 Pack it is 1/1.2km(and Back to Pier) depending on tide from the beach. If you go a little further you will get to Tripod (metal stand on a rock) and that will give you about 1.5km -1.7km (and Back to Pier) Then you can swim to Mc Arthurs and back for a distance of about 2.5km

Why not? I swim there every year - never had any issues - aside from rescuing many from the river mouth - for failure to pay attention to the tide mostly... alternately inability to swim completely....

Best swim training ever as a schoolboy - get out of bed, walk across the road, dive off jetty - swim against the tide for an hour, shower and off to school...

We used to ski at the North End lake too from time to time... Check with SABCO what the water quality is like - I am sure they still test it regularly.
