I'm still keen on the 3D view

We have awesome smart phones today with Hi Resolution screens, imagine uploading a track/PX file, the app then pulls a 3D wire map of say google or somewhere, now the 2 is overlaid, showing you the route you will take, up or down the track, to a corner and then double back/showing the turn and the elevation change, with a wire/topographic background.

+ all the usual stuff.

Route discovery and guidance

- Live tracking / route monitoring (locating and guidance too)

+1 - locate routes in an area and then give guidance on how to ride those routes. Something lacking in most mobile apps.

Go and look at Orux Maps then combine it with Waze. Orux Maps can use both online as well as offline maps and the maps rotate ie not locked in North Up. Also can link to HRM's and export to other trackers and Goolge earth. Waze is a community GPS program that relies on live user feedback to provide updates along your route...could be quite handy for security and trail status.

I am going to suggest something out of the box here, let the endomondo's, strava's, garmin connect's do what they do best.

Do something new...

Proper mechanic's app with tool checklist and step by step for every job

Agree. You've put a line in the sand saying all the cycling apps out there are 'nothing special'. Would be a tough nut beating them with their hordes of developers and established millions of users.

It sounds like you're making a cycling app for the sake of making a cycling app. Find the reason first, then see if it's viable (which might be what you're doing here, but you're pulling the cart before the horse)

Build something like Training Peaks that integrates with your app and you'll have a winner, you'd then be able to charge for the app, but like most have said, its quite a broad scope with tons of other good apps already out there with millions of followers, its a tall ask to beat that.

A nice integrated API for parsing the ride data onto all the current apps (Strava, Endomondo, Training Peaks, Garmin etc...) would also be a big plus, would save a lot of people a lot of hassles.

Pretty much what Strava does these days...

Make it more friendly to more heart rate monitors.

The ability to plan a route, say in Google Earth or Maps, then make it work like a navigator.

There's way too many "tracking" apps these days. As someone suggested, do something new.

I for one, would like an app that shows me all the events/races in an area , with a map and links to details.

Then, similar to what's going on on the hub, a way to comment/like/rate that very race or event .

Add to that regular tracks/routes/places with their details. I'm not talking Strava segments, but actual "places to go ride" . You know like Groenkloof / BigRedBarn / Van Gaalens and info on that.

All of above of course using your GPS and Map to show you what is nearby.

+1 on this, I currently have the choice of so many cycling apps to track riding, took me a while to settle on endomondo, mainly because it was so stable, but then upload to strava to see the social aspect, I did find nice features in all of the apps, but couldn't find one that combines everything thou in one complete app.

If the app is going to be particularly for South Africa, I feel the suggestions of having ratings of the local trails and races would be something unique.

I'm obviously not making a cycle app for the sake of it, otherwise I wouldn't even bother asking you guys what you wanted. I'd like to solve problems, and create something FREE/SPONSORED that everyone would enjoy and appreciate.

So to sum up the responses:

1. 3d route tracking (including corners and climb).

2. A local social track finder with the ability to add routes and share them in SA.

3. A warning/crime avoiding app.

4. A proper mechanic app.

5. More girls. On and off bikes.

Have I left anything out?

Make this grouped by track and route, say Rietvlei track/location, blue and green and yellow routes,

Nothern Farm track/location with x y z routes.

of course the concept of strava / segments sub sections of the route could be nice to see how fast/faster you do a certain climb.

4. A proper mechanic app.

4D route tracking?

I'm going to stay on the fence, not often a marketing guy claims he is a problem solver. Have you got anything on an emulator we can check out so far?

I'm in the research phase. I have nothing so far. Just trying to find a problem, and solve it.

What on earth is 4D route tracking?
