I have Stans Crest 29 wheels. Did the conversion of putting on rim tape and Stans valves with UST tyres.

Filled with Stans, but air keeps coming out at the valve.

Re-did the whole process about 4 times without any luck.

Will it work if I put a rim strip on as well?

Not too fussy about weight.

What do you mean 'coming out the valve'?

What rim and what tape are you using?

I had a similar issue - same wheels. I could get the tyres inflated but air (and sealant) would leak out from around the valve hole. I solved the problem by making sure to rotate the wheel continuously for about 5 minutes after inflating. That seemed to force the sealant into any holes and seal everything up.

That was about 2 months ago - haven't had a problem since.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight.

Good luck. If it is a fairly slow leak, take your bike for a ride around the block. Hit a few bumps (or up and down the pavement) - that helps seat the tire as well. And it obviously keeps the wheel rotating...

I have Stans Crest Rims, using Stans Rim tape.

Air coming out at the valve only.

25mm tape? so the air is leaking out the spoke holes then coming out the valve area?

There is a procedure for doing the tape: First you have to prepare the surface of the rim: Stan the Man recommends roughing it with some Scotch-Bright then cleaning with some brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Then the tape must be applied with a good force, and there should be a about 3-5 cm overlap. There are videos on their web site.

They also recommend checking for leaks with soapy water after inflation around the bead, and wobbling the tyre in that area to seal the smaller leaks.

One other thing I do (on Stans recommendation) is first put a tube in the tyre after putting the tape on the rim, pumping to 3 bar and leaving it for a few hours to help the tape bond to the rim, Then obviously take the tube out and put the sealant in.

Hello All,

I am on ZTR crest 29" rims and had great success with tubeless until I changed from a Bontrager to Scwalbe tire. 1st few rides where fine, but suddenly the back tire just went flat, Cant find any place where Stan's is leaking out so my conclusion is it must be crappy rim tape. Obviously I just put a tube and came home. What baffles me is that this morning I reseated tire without tube, added fresh stans and it seems to be holding??

What rim tape do you guys use?? I am not convinced this is the end of my troubles and would appreciate any comments

All the best

sometimes the rim tape can split at the point where it is cut to allow the valve to go through the rim. if this valve hole is not done very carefully, it can be a problem.

yup, just look at the 'how to' video on the stan's site, and you will get a good advice on installing it all.

That rubber over the spoke holes concerns me. The thing is with Stans tape is its very strong and sticky, even then after a while when you service it you can see the indentations of the spoke holes. How the rubber of a tube will hold, I have my doubts.

btw I do an annual service of my wheels, which includes truing and re-taping.

Use normal rim tape / strips under the rubber strip.

Or use gorilla tape or couple of thicknesses of insulation tape. Whatever you'd use with a tube will be fine.

stans yellow tape, no need for anything else......

and you dont convert a stans rim to tubeless, its purposely designed to be tubeless....you can only do a 'tubed' conversion on those rims :)

good idea to inserts a tube in the tyre and inlfate overnight before you go tubeless, helps bed down the tape and give the tyre some shape if its new and was folded up for a while.....

just taped up my stans road wheels, no problems, inflated with floor pump......air holds.....

On friday night I realised my rear wheel valve leaking air on the American Classic Wide Lightning wheels Im running, the saw I damaged the rim tape on a few occasions removing the tyres.

I browsed some online stores to check out some rim tape options and pricing, and didnt quite like the idea of paying around R150 for a bit of tape barely enough for two tires, so into Mica Hardware Durbanville I went and found this awesome option for rimtape!

Its called Filament tape and it cost me 34BUCKS for 40m!!! I taped my tires, and no issues!

Its got a similiar feel to the Stans yellow tape Ive used before, at a fraction of the price.

Anyway, just a bit of (probably) useless information on a Monday ^_^

^ ^  ^ These are all / mostly good recommendations.

If, however, you feel that you want to struggle a lot more with flat / leaking tyres; If you want to get so frustrated that you want to throw your bike down the next cliff; if you want to be put off tubeless forever, please use Ryder's yellow tape - it is guaranteed to ****-up your next tubeless experience.

Dude, I hope you never have to change your tubeless setup, cos that stiff is a beeeeeeyatch to remove. The filaments stay behind, and you have to prise each one off individually. Then they snap and you have to start all over again.

Bit of advice - next time, go for duct (duck) tape, or gorilla tape. You may have to cut it in half (a stanley knife just rotated around the entire roll works fantastically) but it's far cleaner and easier to maintain.
