I will not argue that Shimano makes really good feeling brakes. I love the on-off feel of the levers. Super nice even down the the entry level BRM-525 models.

I had XTR on the Singular and I they really worked well. Light 1-finger braking, easy to maintain etc. Went with Hopes due to a failure on the front caliper. Happy that I did.

Im fitting an XTR/SLX hydbrid system on the Jamis soon.

Ha ha - yeah I have the 525s on my SSer. Bottom of the range and still decent modulation and braking power.

Bang for buck they're hard to beat.

Somehow Hope seems a better fit for SSers - more "cult" - especially the ones with the british flag cover.

Avid. Blurgh. Havent ridden the Trail stuff yet but the X series stuff is spongy and horrible.

Gotta love humans - lovers and haters on all 3 brake appreciation threads!

Over the years I used

Shimano BRM-515. Shimano XTR, Hope Race X2, Formula and Magura Gustav M, Tekro Cable Discs

In order of preference:

Hope

Shimano

Magura

Formula

Can't comment on Avid or Hayes as I've never used them. I did ride a patchy DH bike with Avid Codes and they felt very nice. I also loved the feel of the SLX brakes and the XTs

I have Formula Rx atm and love them to bits. Also have some lovely SLX on a (not yet mine) SS.

Must say Shimano have done a brilliant job of making all their brakes look the same. These are just like my SLX brakes with more chrome. They all take the same pads too. I wonder if they all work the same too?

hahaha.... Brakes are like wheel size...

"Is that a 29er?!".....

I am not a brand loyal person I suppose, I also dont match match brand names on bikes.

I just worked out that on my bikes I have Magura MT4, Hope v4, Shimano slx, Formula R1 and formula ORO all on different bikes.

I used to run Avid CR and I dabbled in a few other types of Avid and shimano over the last little while.

I look at whether they tether nicely. Some brakes don't feel good when you pull both levers at the same time. The back locks up too quickly and doesnt give you time to control the braking with the front end properly, but that is only when their pull time is not adjustable.

I have found that most decent hydraulic brakes can be bled to run sharp or spongy depending on your preference.

But looks and practicality win the day. How easy are they to bleed, set, service. How available are spares.... I suppose for the weight weenies smaller reservous, shorter cables and small 1 finger brake levers make a difference of 40g per side but in the end, like wheel size, bib shirts, favourite samoosa it all comes down to personal preference.

I like Milo Duo cereal more than the Honey oatees..... It doesnt make them better.

I almost cried reading this rubbish. A few seconds of my life I'm never getting back.
