When do you use a dey fly? I'f I have floating line does it make sense to use a wet fly?

you use a dry fly for trout when they are actively feeding off the top... or as a strike indicator with some droppers below it. It is very exciting fishing but also very frustrating if you cannot match what is hatching or how they are hatching, emergers vs proper dry's

I only fish with floating line on the vaal for yellows....you must have floating line to be able to mend and when targeting fish on dry and dropper. Floating line is way more versatile since you can make a floating line sink(leader with splitshot) but you cannot make a sinking line float...There are applications for sinking like when fishing for tigers when you need to get you fly down to the feeding zone and quickly, but for most of our freshwater fishing in SA, floating is the one to have.

That's EXACTLY why I felt a few pictures were called for. I've ruined my own day in the process.

We used to go after river trout some place in the sappy forests in MP, I can't remember the name or place. You saw otters chasing the fish every now and then. That was awesome fishing!

My largest yellow that did not bust me measured 850mm before I released it. It gave me a look and I could swear it said "F..k You" before it disappeared in a swirl of water.

Yes it was, taken on a Mrs Simpson tied on a no 18 hook. I had it mounted but the fish disappeared before it was delivered.

 must have been a largie oom, they are true test of ability....casting, fly selection, playing the fish and tackle. I don't even think of casting to a largemouth with anything less than 5wt....it will just break alles. San Juan is a good fly especially after rains when the river bottom has been disturbed and midge larvas aka bloodworms are drifting all over. I have found off late that they more inclined to take a san juan in bright yellow or pink chenile vs the traditional red. Don't know why though.
