I have a Giant XTC29 O (2012) model, it has full XT, bar the dodgy Avid brakes, I'm waiting for XT stock to arrive on these, apparently mid November sometime.

My next upgrade is the wheels. Can anyone suggest a decent wheel set that fits well with the bike, bearing in mind that the bike "only" cost me around R18K. I would prefer not to over capitalise here, but at the same time, I would like to ensure that I have as good a wheel set as possible. I weigh 93kg, so strength would be a priority, followed closely by weight. If I could get both of those and have the bike look a bit pimped out, that would be a plus :)

Any help is always appreciated from the learned Hub community ;)Arch EX, you wont be sorry - mine on superstar hubs - schweet!

I just got American Classic 101s on hope hubs. They roll really well. Got them from carbon29er.com for around R6k. The guy was a pleasure to deal with. Also was very helpful when I was deciding what to go for.

At 93kg (or for anyone above 70kg) I wouldn't reccomend the Blunt SL. Actually for a 29er I would stick to the standard Blunt rims.

Why not? I'm 90kg and I'm running 2 sets, both on rigid SS bikes. The first set is two years old, the second a year. No issues, straight and true even with my carefree attitude to tyre pressure.

Must have been a hefty price tag?

Got a the rims for R2000, hubs for R3500 and soles and build cost R2000, so R7500 in total. Way cheaper than carbon wheels I have seen, nothing under R12000.

Got these and picked up the bike yesterday. CWC was great, customized for me with blue nipples etc. to match the bike's color scheme.

Rode them this morning and very happy. Thanks for the advice...

The finished product...

Just did the same for My XTC 29 advanced two weeks ago. Arch EX, Black hope hubs, Wheelsmith DB14 SS spokes with brass nipples cos I am big and fat. Super happy. The missus got the bling deal with the red nipples and red hubs. Huge upgrade from those P-XC2's. Any takers for that?

Another upgrade was the fitting of the 10mm through axle in the back. Supplier drilled out the 9mm QR end caps to 10mm(rather machine it in a lathe) and I fitted a 10mm DT Swiss RWS thru axle. Whether its stiffer, I don't know. The engineer in me tells me its stiffer.

Also put the Magura Storm SL Rotors on 180 front and 160 back. Massive improvement in braking power, almost went over the bars

Enjoy the ride

I went ZTR Flow with hope hubs triple laced both front and back, tired with Maxi Crossmark on the back and Maxi Ardent on front. Used the weigh 98kg but down to 84 now. They proved bullet proof,

When upgrading the brakes to XT, I also changed the rotors to XT Ice Tech (180mm front and 160mm rear). Great improvement on the Avid Elixr 7's all round.

Just blinged up my brakes with some X0's in silver to go with my new silver X0 shifters. Cant say they work better, but they look the part.

No idea why Giant would spec a 160mm on the front of a 29r. Twice I lost front brake coming down a massive descent(I should probably not have taken the HT there  ) because of overheating. Pretty sure it was because of the 160 working way to hard. It surely was not a weight issue with those train wheels that came with the bike.

Anyway enjoy the ride. I am gonna get dressed up in my parka and endure the cold and wet today.
