Where I live no-one rides really, have a couple of friends who have do an odd ride or two with me but 9/10 times I am on my own. It can get boring and it can get tedious but I find that I do a couple of rides that are for fitness and skills and the rest of the time I just go out there and ride for fun. 4 or 5 hr rides anywhere from 40km to 70km, stop off and visit friends, have lunch or a milkshake somewhere, enjoy a great view or watch some wildlife, find new routes and paths and I try not to ride the same route more than 2x a week.

I think we all hit downers sometimes, earlier on this year I was keen to pack it in and sell off my bikes and go back to Xbox or something but thankfully I didnt!

I also enter the odd race here and there but I find thats just too chaotic these days and prefer to just amble along in the countryside and enjoy where I live!

Also think entering an event will help with the motivation!

It is a lot easier if you have something to train for... and also tracking your progress the closer you get to the event ;)

Agree, my experience for 94.7. The difference between the red planned fitness line and the blue actual fitness line on fitrrack.co.za is extremely motivating

I sometimes find that I need to just get on the bike with no intention of going anywhere, and no way of tracking distance. Then just ride around and enjoy the scenery, play around with the bike. Try and wheelie, do stoppies, bunny hop over stuff like we used to do as kids. Not because you have to but because it is fun!

I train every morning, 99% of the time alone. Motivation can be difficult, but it comes from within. I want to ride at my maximum potential and thus I train hard. However, I admit, some days are quite tough. A very good motivator is coaching. I pay for my coaching in advance and thus, if I do not train, I not only disappoint my coach (and myself), but I also loose money! So, I put my head down and train! Coaching can definitely help with motivation.

One word.... STRAVA!

No, jokes. I had the problem 2 years ago after finishing Comrades. Didn't want to start training (running) again. So I started MTBing again, but struggled.

Like someone else said, get a piece of road or singletrack you really like, use it to get fit, and then chase those (your own too) Strava times...

No that I am fit, it is GREAT fun and I get up at 4 every other morning to go ride.

And the new Anthem also helps :)

Agree with Smartie, if you can't get yourself to train and get fit on your own, you will not do it in a group either.

Get your motivation within.

Rule #6

// Free your mind and your legs will follow.

Your mind is your worst enemy. Do all your thinking before you start riding your bike. Once the pedals start to turn, wrap yourself in the sensations of the ride – the smell of the air, the sound of the tires, the feeling of flight as the bicycle rolls over the road.
