So even if you do put a "standard" bearing into these things (which fits perfectly) your insert will not work . I doubt it very much that the thinner bearing can be sourced from any of our bearing shops but I will try tomorrow morning .

Now this means that we can use our standard chinese bearing ' date=' but there is a problem with the inner plastic sleeve if you do this . This sleeve will not fit properly into the bearing because .....[/quote']

Yep, zigactly. I didn't have a vernier caliper, but even a freestate torque wrench wouldn't make it fit. So left it out. Month later the bearing is frozen. Locked. Solid. Haven't bashed it out of the shell to see what is wrong, but it's hard to see what the problem is.

..or get yourself one of these. I've been swopping bearings for a while now and I'm very impressed with the results.  Best tool I've ever owned I think.

Unfortunately they've put the price up a bit recently, but maybe it will get you started on designing your own.

My External BB has given up. I went to Bearing Man and the price for each 6105 bearing was R115 smiley19.gif! So I have purchased a beautiful red anodized Aerozine BB (to match all my other red bits on my Felt Virtue Team) for R299 smiley1.gif. Where did you get your 6105 bearings from and what make are they?

Cheers

I have done the same re-build.The size of the bearing is 25(id)x36.6(od)x5.8mm(That's with my vernier and hope it is accurate)I have tried getting hold of ceramic bearings in this size in SA, but forget it.Not available. You can import them from Boca bearings at +/-R1200/set.Not worth it!! Evans cycles sells a complete Ti and ceramic bb from Token for R750-no shipping charges. That's cheaper than a XTR smiley4.gif

Dirt Rider please tell us where you are getting your bearings from??? Also went to local bearing shop and was told R120 per bearing incl. I do know that there is cheaper bearings on the market once again i hear they come from the east and do not last as long and not up to the standard of other bearings.

Something I have found that works a hell of lot easier than a screw driver to get the bearings out. If you have a socket set the 20mm socket(hexagon) fits in nicely from the back. Instead of clamping the cup in the vice. Put the cup in your bb tool(depending which one you have) I have the PRO tool.. So put the cup in the bb tool put socket in from behind and tap it out with a hammer.

And do you need a BB tool to get the BB off the frame?

Yes you do. If you going to do the rebuild you might as well buy the tool and then you never have to worry about removing the cups again as you will have the tool.

I buy my bearing from a little bearing shop in Centurion . They in the same complex as Merv Dinkelman cycles . I bought 10 bearing the week before Sani2c for R25ea . Now I have heard the story of cheap bearing before and they are not true . These bearing will do more than 100km and to tell the truth the first set lasted over 18 months . I have also found that removing bearing and cleaning, regreasing them works . Ok so I know we got a few rocket scientists that would wanna know how do you repack a sealed bearing . Well it is very easy to take that seal of without damaging it and then put it back after the grease job .

The socket/BB removal tool method does work very well and I use it now to remove bearings .

How do you get the crank off the BB then the BB off the bike in the first place??

My advice will be not to attempt BB rebuilding if you do not have the above sorted.

Also attend one of JB?s courses - you?ll get to see things first hand and get confidence.
