First I need to get the tools to get the BB off. How much and where do you get them from. I take it you would need to unscrew the star cap first before pulling the arm off ?

Most bike shops carry this tool. Do yourself a favour and buy the one that looks like a socket. It should cover the whole external part of the BB and does not leave marks when you apply force.

Yes, you need to remove the star cap first. Some BB tools have that tool included, otherwise most good bike shops will sell it seperately too.

Remember that the drive side of the BB is a left-hand thread.

Nish, I think BBB makes a tool that has got the end cap removel tool aswell as the BB removal tool in one. The non drive side arm you wiggle loose with a flat screwdriver. Remember to lift the little plastic pin that is in the gap between the two pinch bolts.

Ok a week before Sani2C I replaced my Wheelbearings on DT Swiss 240 hubs with El-Cheapo chinese bearings..... they didnt last 1500kms.... they are shot.....

I would reccon that on BBs the El-Cheapos will be fine but on Wheelbearings rather use SKF or FAG......

Great post, did this myself (Not too technically inclined), works well. Most difficult part is to remove the plastic dust cover without damaging it.

Second thing to watch out for, is not to damage the inside of the Alluminium while knocking out the old bearing.

If you do damage your plastic dust cover of a XTR, don't try using old LX/XT one. The XTR cover has a slight ridge and anything else will result in "stiff" turning.

One should also pack a lot of grease when assembling - this should keep the water away for longer - which is really what causes damage in the first place.

Has anyone found that it's always the left bearing packing up first?

Here follows instructions on how to rebuild your Shimano External BB's at a cost of R30.00 (your labour excluded ) I did not use the Press' date=' puller or any other funny tools as I know most people only own a hamer and a screwdriver . OK I also used a knife but a steak knife should also work .

Tools :

1 x medium size Flat tip screwdriver

1 x rubber mullet (half a brick will also work)

1 x Knife

Spares :

2 x 6805.2RS-DYZ @ R15.00ea[/quote']

Anybody know where to get Cheap ones for XT/XTR in Western Cape??

Try Bearings International on Voortrekker Rd, Maitland and/or Zhoes (Spelling?) which is next door.

They generally have a lot more stock of seals, bearings and other parts than Bearing Man

Nice post guys! I know there are a few people cottoning onto this idea and I think its fantastic! We will soon be bringing in replacement bearings in which we will be supplying the shops as well as budding mechanics along with the tools to do the job. Bearings will come with all of the seals and plastic seal/ spacers necessasry for a full replacement. Check out the Enduro website for more details as well as Rush Sports website in the not too distant future for pricing and stocking information when we go live.

What I want to know is if I can fit a external bearing bb on my Trek 8500 with a Race face ride XC crank...

from their website

"With Race Face signature styling' date=' our RIDE XC cranks features the ?EXI interface? - our newest version of our external bottom bracket system delivering superior performance & excellent value."

http://www.raceface.com/components/cranks/5/

I think you will need that specific BB. Does it not currently have one?
