EPO positive ends Italian's career

The anti-doping tribunal of the Italian Olympic Committee has given Danilo Di Luca a lifetime ban from the sport following his positive doping test for EPO ahead of this year's Giro d'Italia, CONI announced today.

Di Luca was also fined €35,000 and must pay €850 for the costs of the proceedings, as well as the costs of the lab analysis, which is 3,150 CHF.

The 37-year-old Italian was brought into the Vini Fantini squad in February of this year. He tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition control taken on April 29, but the news of the result did not break until the third week of the Giro d'Italia. His teammate Mauro Santambrogio also tested positive for EPO in a sample taken on stage 1 the race.

The positive was Di Luca's third doping offence: he served a three-month ban in the 'Oil for Drugs' investigation in 2007, and then tested positive for EPO CERA at the 2009 Giro d'Italia. He was given a reduced ban of 15 months for cooperating with the authorities.

GOOD NEWS! Now can they make life bans for truly guilty first time offenders aswell?

Couldn't agree more, If you set out to intentionaly cheat why should you be given anopther chance?

And we think he's the only one...

Unfortunately we have to be extremely naive to think the peleton is clean.

History has proven you to be right, but i WANT to be Naive and believe that we are starting to see a turn in cycling, a turn that has prompted more of the peleton to be clean than any other time before.

Tis a nice dream

Naive is an emotion. Rather look at all the positive doping tests this year for confirmation of the fact that doping is still widespread.

How many where there? As far as I can remember the actual positive results where pretty small this year and most of the coverage has been endlessly about who did what previously.

It may never be 100% clean but the testing, the passport, the passing of chemical formulas to WADA etc by the pharmaceutical companies of every drug that might mildly raise a riders game and the attitude of the current riders is one that means it'll be a minority. If you dope then more than ever you're going to be caught.

Di Luca was a dinosaur and a tool. He was a serial doper, the team didn't want him, the director didn't want him and even Lance said he was idiot (and you have to be pretty dumb to get a review like that).

Just look at the way people race now. Look at the average speeds. I've been sceptical after so many years of lies but I feel very positive about the state of Pro cycling right now.

After the 2nd one he should have gotten a life ban....

No such thing as "truly" guilty... you either did it or didnt... regardless of the severity, you should get banned. End of story. No if and and, or tainted meat etc... BANNED finished and klaar as they say.

I understand that you want to believe, and me too, but you you have keep an open mind.

By the mere fact that there is much more money on the doping side than anti-doping we can ascertain that the scale is skewed towards drugs and new drugs than can't even be detected now.

On the website http://www.dopinglist.com/index.php?action=news the term "cycling" shows 312 cases. I'm busy registering so that I can see the detail.

I have always had an open mind. That is what has allows a belief that this current change is the most positive chance for a cleaner pro peloton. If I didn't then i'd be stuck in a 'they're all doping' mindset and continually find something to point at and shake my head in disappointment.

Sure there will always be people wanting to cheat to win, because of pressure, lack of ability after all the sacrifice and because of money. Times have changed. Results have changed. Mindsets have changed. It's not 100% rosey, cuddles and hugs but it's going in the right direction and driven by the riders coming through.

Edit: will be interesting to see where and what level the results on the anti doping site are. Let us know if you get in.

One should remember that there are different dopers… the hardcore once like Lance and di Luca and the once that can digest something thats on the banned list…there is a HUGE difference btw. Im against anything doping related but one can't be banned for life if you "digest" something so small that wouldn't really help you at all.. for di Luca i agree he should have gotten life the second time around. if we just ban everybody that has "something" in their system we won't have a peleton…ask anybody ..you get "creams" which sky uses also, you get "asthmatic" medicine and you get all the rest…thats a huge difference between someone like say froome using a cream/ alberto digesting a food than someone laying on a bed and transferring blood…thats a huge difference… just my 2 cents!
