So I have decided to finally give my old road bike (Alpina frame from who knows when) a makeover, it does have gears, but it seems everyone is putting their project bikes in this forum so here goes!

This is a WIP and hope to get it sprayed and done in about a weeks time!

Todo list:

- New Spray job... (Yellow for the frame and thinking black fork) and hoping i can get some nice vinyl cutouts for graphics for the frame.

- Re-do cabling

- Polish up cranks

- New Drivetrain (Still sourcing parts)

Bike as it was originally:

Started stripping the bike down yesterday, realised i didn't have a shifting spanner big enough for the headset so found a f' off big spanner at a friend and used a bit of a shimmy to loosen the locknut:

I also started with the terrible job of stripping the paint... I bought paint stripper in a can - BAD idea as it doesnt do a good job at all and just ends up kinda of going everywhere except on the frame... so im scraping for days, but glad the rust that was on the frame is coming off nice and easily which was my main reason for wanting to re-spray!

Will follow this thread up with progress of how its going..

For the spray job I plan on spraying primer - then some good quality spray paint (Montana) for the colour then a clear coat, i have heard that if you spray clear it can lead to the paint chipping quite easily, does anyone know if this is true?

try Plascon Remove-all. Its in a grey plastic bottle, magic stuff. Will save you some time and you get to ride that baby of yours sooner!

I find the paint on removers to be better. Nitromors is also good. To loosen that headset you can pull the stem out first by loosening the allen key bolt at the top and pulling the stem out, then use a 32 socket to loosen the headset.

Don't have a 32 socket or anything size 32... but thinking i might try stick it in the vice.. should work!

Bummed that i payed just about R100 for this spray on stripper.. not keen to go spend another R80 on more stripper... will see if i can source some

Very ingenious use of a set of feeler gauges there! Started working on my son's bike this weekend as well. Stripped the frame of all the components and went and bought my Remov-all at lunchtime today.

Trying to figure out a cool spray job and some graphics.......

Good luck with your project

Sweet frame reference for the black fork, wish i could do some wicked details like this!

Ok so I spent some time last night, ran into problems with the crank extractor i had not being small enough to fit into the inside thread of the crank... so its off to the bike shop today to let them remove it hopefully!

Managed to get the headset in the vice and remove the fork that way, whatever works hehe!

Other than that the stripping/sanding is going well, I figured out that if i spray the stripper on when the frame is lying down it works much better than hanging the frame... also a metal brush is AWESOME when it comes to all the nooks and crannies, and makes life so much easier.

So should be about 1 more day of stripping and sanding then onto the primer!

Flip the small black round head off the crank remover (lever off with a screwdriver, can fit back on later), should be small enough to fit in the square taper hole to get the crank off. Alternatively find some bolt nuts small enough to fit in the square taper hole (glue 2 or 3 together), and use the crank remover to push against the nuts which will then push against the crank spindle.

Ye I thought about getting a long bolt nut the size of the one that comes out of there but i searched high and low and couldnt find anything that matched, but its cool i need to go through to the shop anyway and query some other parts I need!

Using a proper spray gun for the primer and clear coat which is automotive stuff but using spraypaint for the colour, unfortunately i cant get hold of any auto style paint in time for this project! But i am using some of the best spray paint you get - Montana - used by all the graf guys, it sprays amazingly compared to the normal cheapie spray paint you buy at the hardware store! Just hoping i dont get chipping later on!

Then i started on the polishing up of the old alu parts using the same polishing kit (Torkacraft I think) posted in one of the other SS projects on this forum, parts came out really good but it took a day of elbow grease to shine up the seat post, cranks and stem.
