Seems pretty cool.

Only rode it a short bit, but i giggled like a mad thing.

It can do with some upgrades, but at around R6k, there is budget available to play with.

You welcome to pop round to play with them if you want.

I would love to, it's a little far from Cape Town though.

Sizewise, how is that thing?

I heard last night and just ordered one. They only have the higher spec Expert. Expecting delivery on Wednesday next week. Very exciting!!

Update on the Fatboy I ordered. Order was confirmed by the dealer Friday morning 2 weeks back, delivery expected by Tuesday or Wednesday. Monday morning I called the dealer to follow up on ETA. In the mean time I had to make big plans to come up with the cash, all done, I was just awaiting delivery. Monday afternoon I get an e-mail from Spez SA advising that they had cancelled my order on the system the previous Friday as all the bikes had been pre sold, thus nothing available for me. Unfortunately they neglected to notify the dealer at the time. After some e-mail exchange over the next few days, the solution from Spez is I can wait for the 2015 bikes to come out at the end of this year. Fortunately the dealer (Duane - Concept Cyclery in Waterfall) made it right by doing me a killer deal on another model. Big up to Duane for great customer service but huge frustration with Spez SA....

Which model was the bike that he did the deal on?

During Stage 3 of Epic I was suffering along a district road climb with a bunch of about 9 other riders. Stage 3 stands out not for being the longest stage but for the howling wind which made the going so tough. Next thing a buzzing, humming noise takes over from the constant howl of the wind...... yes, Mannie on his fatty was hauling past us at a rate of knots. He had time for a brief chat, answering questions about his machine, then off up the hill never to be seen by our little bunch again. So to answer your question, he was a machine on that bike. He obviously had a mechanical so was out of position, but hell he can ride that thing.

I was in that bunch on stage3.

SOC14: HANDS ON WITH THE ROCKSHOX BLUTO EQUIPPED BOREALIS ECHO + WEIGHT

posted by Zach Overholt - April 29, 2014 - 10am EDT

Even with an army of test bikes, the Borealis Echo was a tough bike to track down at the Sea Otter Classic. When it wasn’t being back flipped by Gregory Robinson-Krunrod, or given to trials exhibition riders, Echos could be spotted tearing around the venue by a number of fat bike suspension curious folk.

In spite of it’s popularity, we managed to track one down to get it on the scale…

Anyone worried about the durability or versatility of the Echo needn’t worry. These bikes were absolutely hammered at the SOC and were no worse for the wear at the end of the show. We can’t guarantee that many will be back flipped or spun, but it is possible…

This medium framed Echo tipped the scale at an impressive 27.07 lbs or 12.28kg. That weight is for a SRAM X01 build with X9 aluminum crank and WTC direct mount chainring, Borealis Carbondale rims running Surly Bud and Lou 4.8″ tires set up tubeless, and a modest aluminum cockpit with an Ergon SME3 saddle. Certainly not a cheap build by any means, but also not the top of the line. Pretty impressive for a bike with nearly 5″ wide tires and a suspension fork.

Stay tuned for our first impressions of the Echo and the Bluto soon!
