Fat Bike

I did 50kms+ yesterday on my fatboy, including a lot of the spruit, and it was amazing. Yes it's harder/heavier on the longer uphills but it's so much fun on the downhills it feels like you're sitting on a motorbike you have so much traction through corners. It is such a great training/fitness bike, as fun (if not more fun) than a trail bike, and being able to take it to the beach once in a while or do a fatbike tour once every cpl of years is just a bonus. So you need to grit your teeth a bit and stand more to pedal up the hills (and build more strength, fitness, mental tenacity in the process) than you would on a normal bike, but to me that is what most rides are all about. TOUGH UPHILLS, FAST DOWNHILLS. My trance is starting to collect a thin layer of dust and that is saying something. I worry that when I stick a suspension fork on the fatbike and make it more trail capable that the layer of dust may get a bit thicker.

I find that on the uphill u get in a comfy gear, sit back and spin to top. On the downhills it can get a bit rowdy but corners are amazing, slow or fast, it just sticks.

My other bike is also getting far less love, I alternate between the 2, friday and Sunday, they both get a ride.

Same here...my Cannondale 29'er gets ridden much less nowadays...

That's why I am considering getting one bike, a fatty, with two wheel sets....one bike to insure and more space in the garage!!

Another "same here"...  My fatty lives in my office at work and is now the bike I take on our quick 20km after-work rides (gravel, quad playground and single-track).  It is a great way to get a more intense work-out in a short amount of time whilst still having heaps of fun!  The 29er HT and duallie now take turns over weekends depending on the terrain we ride.

Fatty is set up 1x10 (32T and 11-36).  Personally, I find the fat tyres provide ample "suspension" and I have no plans to incur the weight penalty of a suspension fork.

Added bonus of a fatbike: I have yet to encounter a person who hasn't smiled after riding or even just seeing the bike.   ^_^

Sooo, the Fatbike talk is getting more serious in our house.

Between the Silverback Double Scoop and the Mongoose Argus, which is the better buy in terms of components?

Any other recommendations in that price bracket?

Look at the Titan range as well. Speced nicely and well priced. A bit heavy but they are all pretty much the same weight at that price point. I have the Titan sport and have done a 3 x 10 conversion. It goes well and is a lot of fun.

Rather go for the Silverback - best bang for your buck and rock-solid bikes.

Look at the specialised fatboy se model as well, same price bracket and it has the same frame as their top end fatties so upgrading components in the future is easy. I have one and absolutely love it. All I've done is stick some shimano hydraulic brakes on.
