Wheel play

Hey Hubbers

I need advice please, I'm not clued up on all the technical jargon so i will try explain best i can.

My front wheel is running fine and everything but i'm a little worried as the Quick release is not to tight, in fact it is practically just holding the wheel in place. This all sounds perfect and seems to be working perfect but this does allow the wheel to have play if i push the wheel in top and bottom (as one would check if a cars wheel bearing need replacing). This happens while go over obsticles at an angle too. It doesn't have a lot of play, a couple of mm but i'm just worried that i might have to tighten it a bit to stop the play on the hub else it might break while crossing an obsticle. But then again i dont want to tighten it as i dont want to seeze the hub.

How much play should it have?

Must i tighten the quick release a little bit more?

Thanks a Mil

Happy holidays

No play at all. If you have sealed bearings, have them replaced. If you have cups and cones, have it tightened, actually have the hub serviced.

Is it tight and difficult when you open the QR?

Personally I make it so its pretty tight when you swing up the lever to lock it and then just back it off slightly.

@Flat29 , Thanks Bud

@ Mojo , Not at all, when released it is basically just touching and the clamped closed.

@LTR , Thanks Dude

Just tighten the quick release so it is quite stiff, you wont squeeze the hub(as was said earlier). If you still have play then the hubs need tightening and then you are opening another can of worms. When it is really cold I struggle to open the QR, that tight. Especially on a 29r. More lateral force, apparently.

you cannot damage the bearing. the shaft clamps between the shock and the bearing runs on the shaft, not against the shock

Seen as i cummuted to work today i tightened it and now its really tight, i battled to release it so when i could release it i turned it slightly so that its still tight but manageable, but the play it still there. So you guys recon the hub needs tightening, ummm.. can i do this myself or would this have to be taken in for?

What wheels / hubs are they? If they are cup & cone based (usually Shimano) they can have some play in them, which is adjustable. And what quick release are you using?
