Had a rather big punture on Saturday.....

The upside was that I just topped up the Stans and although it took a while (a long while) the hole was sealed and I could finish the ride after I pumped the tire.

The downside is everything is covered in a layer of latex.

My legs. cleaned :)

My clothes . washed but not clean :(

And my bike. As in everywhere.........with a layer of sand grains nicely embedded.

So here is the question.

How do I clean this mess?

Is the only way water, soap and elbow grease.?

How do one clean in all the little cracks....?

Is there something I can use to dissolve the latex that is safe for my bike?

this is what i've heard works:

  • warm to hot water:causes the latex to peel off
  • thinners: works a bomb, but nasty. can attack paintwork and other stuff.
  • WD40.

Be careful not to scratch the frame when you wash, the sand and a rag acts like sand paper. Hot water Cap says will work, I agree. Don't laugh but I ride with an xtra water bottle just for washing off the stans if i puncture during a midweek ride but this is a risk over longer rides if you need the water and you're far away from a tap....

The top does not look that bad just a few spots. but the short are ruined. It does not really show as it is black but yeah............. it is there.

one of the few occasions that a pressure washer comes into its own... Make the clothes really soapy with green sunlight hard soap, hang on line with lots of pegs and wash with pressure washer..

I use muck off, pressure washer and elbow grease on the bike - that or drop it off at Mikes bikes for a paid for wash.

Took my bike to have my tyers changed from MTB to slicks for a road race, the bike shop who I will no name had the genius at the back clean the latex off ,as he must have spilled some with a wire brush. Not cheep rims now all scratched. I could not even bother complaining. Owner never checks on work done just stands behind till....

Staying away for store.

So I researched this and found using spray oil or Mr min can help with a cloth. Or a eraser if its not got grit in it. It forms a rubber ball and easy to rub the stuck stuff off.

The Mr Min trick may work, Mr Min works a treat for removing store price stickers - spray on leave for 20mins then scrape/rub/lift off.

All I do know is do not get Stans on paving stones let it dry and then ever hope of getting it off, becuase you ain't!!

Best tip is wet the stans immediately after you spill it on whatever object fate draws into its path, then its relatively easy to clean up.

Off topic but Doom also works for removing stickers and tar. Just spray on, watch it dissolve the tar and wash off properly
