Western Cape has worst cyclists by far

I propose we operate on the principle that if you have something negative to say which doesn't stimulate a constructive debate, rather just keep it to yourself.

Can someone please do the honest thing and save some space on the interweb by deleting this thread?

I like this bloke!

I don't generally greet because:

1. I'm seeing butterflies from an interval session and is trying to keep my bike upright.

2. I roll to get away from people and find quiet time, and

I will impart a helmet nod, at least, if I make eye contact with someone's greeting.

That is common courtesy. Agreed.

About the opening post:

What do you intend to achieve with this thread other than spread negativity?

Bloody moangatte, you should be more worried about the fact that you worry about crap like this *smk*

I "liked" your comment, although I don't know what *smk* means.

Sauser greeted me as he came down Jonkershoek. He owns a house in Stellenbosch so he is now basically a Western Cape local. He is not one of the worst cyclists.

I didn't realise that cycling was a social event. I go out to train and have some alone time. I'm not rude about it (wave if greeted), but I dont feel the need to greet every bloke that decided to go for a cycle.

After a long holiday in Cape Town and its surroundings, I can only say that I'm very ashamed to be called a cyclist when riding there! I have always been friendly to those that share my passion for sport, whether it be swimming, walking your dog, cycling or running. I am also one that greets my fellow cyclists and runners as this is not only friendly, but also creates a great atmosphere under each other. All I can say is that I'm shocked! Cape town has these great cycling friendly roads like no other city in SA and every cyclist I greeted gave me a bad look and just went on further. This not only happened once or twice, but more than 50 times during my 4 week stay in the Cape. I asked a fellow hubber Dealer01 when I collected my cassette from him and he says this has been going on for quite a while. How can one blame road rage against cyclists if they ride two or even 3 abreast, can't greet back or say thanks to vehicles that go out of their way to ride around these riders that ride next to each other? They have absolutely no respect for other cyclists or cars on the road for that matter. I am truely ashamed

Riding all over Cape Town and spending about 50% of my time on the MTB and the other on my road bike, I can definitely *generalise* as follows:

- You have a much better chance of a return greeting in the Northern vs. the Southern subs.

- You have a much better chance of a return greeting when on your MTB than on you road bike. Even from other roadies. Seems they're more happy to acknowledge mountain bikes than road bikes. (Think they're too busy checking out if you've got better kit! :) )

Sometimes I get into 'the zone' and don't notice much around me, might even have missed a few greetings myself, but always try greet / respond.

Don't know if this zone thing happens to anyone else, its like a state of trance, and you don't actually remember that stretch of pedalling.

I agree there's many misluk capetonians...i greet with "howzit/morning"...with something crude on the end...i also find it very therapeutic to time a lekker skuid as i ride past or gooi n snot rocket...perhaps if we all did this we would be able to see or smell those misluk cyclists from a distance...besides that, its always a good idea to be friendly, you never know when you'll need some assistance from a stranger...even a lift from a stranger in a car....but fact is its only a small amount of misluk bliksems that are actually riding around there.

Ai tog...

Always good to be friendly, even to pedestrians that make way for a mtber on the sidewalks (usually me). I do sometimes feel like a prick when I don't greet cyclist back, but usually I'm just so out of breath I can barely keep to a straight line.

My suggestion, don't be offended, and enjoy the ride.
