Extreme Makeover - Morewood Edition

That would be one moerse big torx. But I have one... LOL!

The specialist tool shop I went to only had T60 and T70. T60 has a bit of play. T70 is too big.

Steve (from Morewood) told me that it was a hex key. So we tried a 14mm (too big) then a 12mm... perfect!

I know Patches did his this way so that he could change his mind later if he liked but are you saying that if I wanted a more permanent effect I should media blast the frame first?

The frame was just stripped of paint given a light sanding and the plastidip stuck like hobo turds to spruitrat tyres

Doesn't get more solid than that, folks.

Frame did seem to be Xhatchsanded before we took 1000 grit to it,think thats why it took so well  Then he decided he didnt like the colour and we were unable to peel it off or even scratch it off with my fingernail.... removeall did the job.It hasnt lasted to good on motorbike tanks and ferrings.. belt buckles etc.. continuously nik it

Very cool. Where did you get the Preval paint kit? On what parts did you use the plastidip?

The whole frame....

hahaha! not the whole frame... I'm leaving the carbon seat stays as is. So it's the main triangle and the chainstays/swing-arm.

Very cool. Where did you get the Preval paint kit? On what parts did you use the plastidip?

Got the Preval kit (R130 for kit. R85 for refill) from Builders Warehouse. Plastidip was from there too (R230 for 673mm colourmix kit. I used 300ml of that and still have left over).

The thinning solvent was the tricky one to find. The kit suggests Naptha. After going to a few paint shops and getting told "We've never heard of Naptha", I decided to do some research.

Naptha is a hydrocarbon solvent in the same family as Tourene and Xylene. Naptha has the fastest evaporation rate of the 3, then Tourene, then Xylene.

However fast evaporation isn't always good, when it comes to a smooth finish. So the pro's recommend a solution of 35% Naptha to 65% Tourene, or 40% Naptha to 60% Xylene. I could only find Xylene (Ilex makes it. R110 for 750ml from Jack's Paint). I then spoke to a car spraying guru and he said that with SA temperatures, slow evaporating is better. So I didn't bother continuing the search for Naptha, and settled on a 1:1 Plastidip to Xylene mix.

It dries pretty quick. 5 min and a coat is dry to the touch. Finish is satin smooth.

yup! Tons of the metalizer available at Builders... that and the mix kits are about all they have. None of the rattlecan colours.

I plan on using the glossifier over the whole thing when done.

Patches, where did you get the Preval kit?

I meant the whole frame as I the picture shown above in blue. .... it is clear that blue was the colour chosen.
