and compared to the price of a new one??? R7k is excessive..period.

A new TALAS is about 10.5k, but 7k for a repair is pretty steep even if you have bollocksed it up properly.

Leftys are easy to service unless there's play in the roller bearing assembly. Then it's best left to the agents, they have all the right measuring equipment.

But back to the original point... Brain cartridges need some very specific tools that are only ever sold to the agents. The 50 hour service is pretty simple, but if anyone other than Spez touch it your warranty goes out of the window - so you're pretty much stuck with them. Fortunately their service is usually pretty good.

Having a look at this video the Brain is quite a complex assembly. At first I was wondering why couldn't an inertia valve be a maintenance free item since it's a sealed unit but I see that all the compression circuits normally found in the shock are now in the brain.

80K for the bike 3k for the service sounds about right! do u get coffee while u wait?

Coffee and vaseline, when buying and servicing... kinda like a BMW - it's a nice thing to have, but be prepared to cough to keep it going.

Droo, BMW's come with a service plan, for a while anyway, so its free for 5 years or so. Sounds like Spaz need to think about building that into the price. Its the next logical step after HP for bikes, which is already here. I hate the idea of owning a bike I can't service myself.

I know there is some story to do with the nitrogen chamber in the brain shocks ,

you might need some rocket scientist boy wonder to service your shock .

There's a nitrogen chamber inside almost all shocks, but the Spez ones need a special tool to disconnect the remote hose from the brain to get the whole thing apart, and the fork cartridge needs a vacuum bleed bath and some other unobtanium bits to refill.

It seems that the answer to the Brain question depends on who you talk to. I finally got the answer that works for me from a Specialized Dealership owner who I know well and trust. He said that he recommends not doing anything at all with the Brain/shock unless you are experiencing consistent air loss. It's been his experience that overhauling a perfectly operating Brain sometimes results in things not quite being right afterwards.

He didn't go into detail, but the bottom line for me is to get my fork overhauled once a year and not worry about the Brain until I have to.

FWIW, how your warranty is interpreted is often determined by the relationship you have with your dealer.

As I work my way towards my Spez 50 hour service, how about some context to your comments? How many services and cost so far?

I've never tried a Lefty, but those who ride them certainly rave about them.

And yet whenever I see one, my over engineering mind plays 10,000 warning bells in a deafening crescendo.

I know they work. But I just can't get over it.
