I might be wrong... but with my X9 crank they just removed both the blades and the Spider that holds the blades and did the direct mount WOLFTOOTH. (See link below)

Phone Janos or Naas at EVO Bikes... They are experts at the 1x10 conversion thing.

You'll have to remove the crank to get the smaller rings off. Your new ring replaces the large chainring. AFAIK the Sram crank will work with the wolf, RF and other 104BCD 1x rings now available, as will SLX, XT and possibly XTR as well. Its dead easy to convert - a bit harder getting used to the gearing, but very worthwhile. So much better not having to worry about switching front rings...

just remember 26"1x10 is not the same as 29"1x10.

for those suggesting to just go train harder, you are F.O.S.

On the steep stuff, a 36 rear and 32 front is hard work and tiring on a 29" bike (not impossible, but you can run out of fun).

a 42 bail out option is a good one, and the general Lee conversion rather than the XX1 cassette is the cheaper choice.

The problem with the General Lee conversion is that it wears to quickly.

My Oneup Components 42T is in the post and should be here next week. So on a 11/36 cassette I ditch the 17T and add the 42T on the other end effectively giving me a 11/42 cassette. For $85 (at the time) a great saving over XX1 and XO1.

Running that wih either a 30T or 32T Wolftooth upfront on my 29er HT gives me a very cost effective 1x10 with wide range. As soon as it arrives I will post a new subject with pictures and read up.

Yes I do lose a little on the flats but I have clocked in excess of 40km/h on flats with my 30T upfront. In fact I am finding the 30T on the 29er HT a very very suitable front chainring.

whats the link for Oneup? sounds interesting. what size rear deraileur do you need for the 42t, med or long cage?

I have a 32t chainring and in Karatara, it was quite an effort getting up some of those climbs with a 36rear.

The one up ring will also wear fast its 7 series aluminium like the XX1 and General Lee.

For 29ers surely a 30 tooth up front will provide reasonable gearing with an 11-36 up hill. Probably too little for high speed stuff though?

I suppose everything wears eventually.

IMO the General Lee replaces the top 4 rings so you are in them quite a bit. They are in the end your climbing gears.

The Oneup is only the last ring with the rest of the original cassette available. So your use of the 42 should be minimal. I am looking at 1 ring lasting at least 2 cassettes maybe even 3.

I can get 2 Oneups for 1 General Lee.

I am running a 30t wolf in front on my stumpy. Was 2x10 X9 (type 2). I still dropped the chain on seriously rooted downhill stuff, but it seems that cutting a link or two from the chain did the trick. Rode the same trails again and no issues anymore. As for ratios I find 30t with 11-36 fine for the AM stuff i ride in the WC.

Has anyone encountered a problem running a 40 or 42T gear with their derraileur?

It seems 10sp derailleurs are built to handle a 36T gear and no bigger. Or is www.buycycle.com lying?
