Thoroughly enjoyed olympic 5km mens and 3km womens competitions. Being Dutch made it even sweeter

Easy to see similarities with riding. From what I understand most skaters are good cyclists but reverse does not hold.

Thoughts why we do not stack up on ice?

Yhea, well done to NL. Gold, silver, and bronze in the men's 5000m and gold in the women's 3000m.

Both sports use the leg extenders (gluts, quads, calves) and both require good core strength.

In addition to this, skating uses leg abductors (both legs on the straights, outside leg for crossovers), leg adductors (inside leg for crossovers), and the fibularis longus and fibularis brevis (when doing dutch rolls on the straights.) The ankles stabilizers also need to be very strong to be able to apply power into the skate.

So skating uses all the muscles required for cycling. Cycling only uses some of the muscles required for skating.

The other thing is, there is a lot more technique to learn in skating than there is in cycling. Learning to hold an outside edge in skating is often a stumbling block to learning to skate.

(Disclaimer: I've never done speed skating. My knowledge of skating is from ice hockey & figure skating, and coaching both from beginners to club competition level.)

P.S. There is a club that does short speed track at the rink at Festival Mall, Kempton Park. Unfortunately there are no long speed track facilities in the country, neither any frozen rivers to do a Elfstedentocht  .

Track cycling and speed skating are close buddies, yes speed skaters makes awesome track cyclists. Both fantastic events to watch. Love the speed! Hectic

Hi gents,

I know nothing about skating and need both my feet on the floor to stop from falling over, but what astounded me was the speeds that they are capable of. Wow, 130Km/hr down hill and averaging something like 60Km/hr round the "track" in the 5000m.

Roller blading is an excellent compliment to cycling, if only there was a boulevard in Joburg

Last time I cycled in the Cape there were a few guys on the parallel road to Somerset West doing "speed skating" on roller blades. They were preparing for some event. It took us some time to catch up to those guys. They were motoring and it looked almost effortless.

12 years ago I live in Den Haag. There is an indoor skating rink at De Uithof (incuding go-kart track and other activities) where i tried my hand at speed skating. What I remeber most was how much stronger my core was after an skating every other day for 2 months. My cycling improved but I also got heavier from muscle. I used it a lot in the winter months as cross training.

And yes those skates are very hard to use!

The sport is really big over there. Every cyclist I knew was cross training on the skate rinks
