Hi,

A friend is looking for a dual suss bike mainly for Marathon type riding. (i.e. Sani, Berg & Bush etc.)

He falls into the BIG GUY category:

  • 6ft 5inches tall
  • ±119kg
  • Hands like a skottelbraai... get the idea?

Questions are:

  • Carbon vs Ally frame - Advantages etc.?
  • 2 x 10 vs 1 x 11 (likes simplicity)
  • Bike suggestions

At this stage the SantaCruz Tallboy © XXL is at the top of the list of bikes, anything else he should be looking at?

Any advice or own experiences will be appreciated.

Santa Cruz Tall Boy all the way with Fulcrum red metal wheels...John Smit was riding the 2014 tallboy at Route 66, enough said about BIg Guys.

At that size I would go alli over carbon, 9 or 10 speed over 11 cause he WILL snap it on a climb somewhere.

Tallboy is a good call, also look at the Merida range and Turner or Salsa.

Wheels - deff something build for punishmentLove the Fulcrums, but also look as other options built for freeriding or even DH?

Make sure he gets a proper bike fitment done.

I would suggest Aluminium too. Carbon although strong doesnt have the longevity that Alloy does. Been there, broken 2 carbon frames, at 92-96kg, 195cm tall.

Tallboy is a great ride. The Aluminium one at XL is plenty big.

Handbuilt wheels with brass nipples. Leave the prebuilt stuff alone.

And I'll throw an Intense Spider into the mix.

I have been looking at this http://www.momsenbikes.com/x-al not a bad option on paper, but don't know anyone who has one of these, know someone that has a different momsen and he is quite happy with it

Hi-jack on (Don't want to discourage people on Momsen-just sharing)

Not too sure what happened here, but some pics can speak a 1000 words:

Pyga, like Tyga and Tatt said. That said, we're probably biased, but he would be silly not give one a try. First class service and warranty too. Go to Hatfield Cycles, I'm sure they would have a demo and their service is excellent.

At that size, stay the ****away from carbon anything would be my recommendation. Even a carbon water bottle cage with those hands ;)
