Argus - Considering adding Slicks to my MTB (input)

Recommended Posts

I rode the world funride champs on my Shova with knobblies on once. Hard work that.

OP - Kenda Kwest are decent, and about R 120 a tyre.

A twentynaainer is basically a road bike anyway, so no shame in having skinny tyres on

If you are chasing a target time then get the slicks. ....If not then leave it the way it is and keep that money for something else on the bike when things wear out

Agreed, just enjoy it,not worth racing it with a MTB

Slicks will make the ride much easier. I wont worry about sludge, but it probably wont harm if there is some sealant in the tubes anyway.

The biggest hassle for me is to get the tubeless off, and on again afterwards.

If you're running tubeless its not worth the effort / cost. But this depends on the tire you currently have on. The Maxxis tires are fairly fast rolling on tar, so if you have those I'd say ride it with them on.

I'm doing it on my 26" hardtail with Maxxis Ikon rear and Schwalbe Rocket Ron in front. Changed to slicks for the Burger last year, and it was definitely not worth the effort.

I did the same wasted a lot of money to get my 29r faster couldn't keep up with my roady friends. If you are chasing time spend the money on a road bike

No slicks, started in group B last year on 29er, the irritation of the sound of my tyres to roadies was priceless, but besides that, unless you chasing specific time, not worth the hassle

I'd go for slicks, I did the Argus route a couple of weeks ago and it was really hard work fighting the wind through to Camps Bay on my knobblies. And it's a cheap conversion, tyres and tubes cost R380 total

You'll thank me in the last 20km...

It's the conversion back to tubeless that's the pain. Either you have to do it yourself (with all the frustration that goes with that) or you have to pay another couple of hundred rand to have your LBS do it. Add that cost to the cost of slicks and tubes and you're closing on R600.

I just don't think its money well spent for one race a year, but that's just my opinion.

Besides all your mates asking you if you sit when you pee now....So don't do it.
