must be honest i was trashed after the runs and the free ice ice cold beer was the best reward ever!!

again well done Johan and the whole team, lets do it again next month!!

I think that's a bloody good idea! We've been deprived of such enduro goodness for so long that I think Hakahana should have just one more enduro before the end of the year...

That's your total time for the down stages that determine ones results. The ups are not timed, but there is usually a "window period" set in which a rider has to report to the start of a stage.

From EMBA (the Enduro Mountain Bike Association)...

"5.5: Result

The General Classification (GC) will be calculated by adding all Special Stage times together for each rider."

And as for the shuttle to the water point, that was just that. A rider still had to hike up to the start of SP one, and all riders had this offered to them. I get that shuttling to the start of a stage is not #enduro, but again, the shuttle drop off was not the start.

lol thanks for clearing that up, i will take the shutle to the water points etc, i know i am lazy but

no matter how you put it, it was frikken awesome fun!!

lol patch i fully agree but the format was not a true enduro type format either, enduro as far as i can tell states that you ride to each down run and your total time is what counts, this was a time recording for each run and if it took 5 min or 5 hours to get to the start of the next run didnt seam to matter( have not seen results yet so may be very wrong though), i would gladly pay double to make sure i didn't have to peddle or walk up those frikken hills,

i loved every second of the day despite a complete sense of humor after walking up to start 3 :cursing: .

As far as #Enduro's go this was the true style to it.

Only timed on the 4 downs and not the ups and the downs are added together.

This is why I LOVE this format, cause I totally suck at the ups. I have no shame in pushing my bike to the top.

Its cool to see you Gauteng-alengers getting into it ... Well done to Johaan and all the guys who helped.

From the pics i saw on the book of the face it looked like a jol.

In my opinion, the whole point of Enduro is to have a racing discipline which resembles trail riding as closely as possible. Untimed climbs and timed downhills achieves this goal perfectly, and makes it possible for guys who put in 2 hours a week to hang with guys who put in 8 hours a week.

With the shuttle at the start, we only had 540m to climb, and at our own pace. The climbs are also a great opportunity to chat to the other riders, making it a more social experience.

Personally, I think an enduro should have at least 500-1000m of untimed climbs between stages, with shuttling only being used if the climbing would otherwise exceed that elevation.

Awesome day out! Loved it. Enjoyed the climbing - wish there can be more such technical climbing in XC races!

The revert back to manual timing helped a lot to decrease time in saddle.

I now understand why the guys pitched with backpacks! One water bottle only lasted me that long.

So we learn!

Hydration packs are definitely #Enduro

Oh dear....you must have been the guy I look at at the start (I actually looked at your one bottle) and I refrained myself from saying what I was thinking (which doesnt happen much)...Glad you saw the reason we drag those heavy bags up to the top with us. I finished 2.5L on the ride.

I only had 1.5l in my small backpack and finished having cramps in my legs on the way to the start of stage 4

LoL I had pretty much the same setup...1.5L and cramps (calves) on that last trek up to SP4!

Right calf is still sore.

Might have been me actually. I only had one water bottle but I refilled it every time I got back to the saddle. It wasn't so bad but then I've learnt to ration from rock climbing.

I was the guy on the orange cotic in an orange shirt.

I do actually have a camelback but I don't like using it since it makes me hot and it is baby blue (I borrow it from my SO). I'll get my own one of these days.

Did you have that tumble on SP2 with the damaged helmet? Post a pic! That was quite a close a call!

Hows the head? and the helmet?

You looked a little dazed at the finish of SP2

Huge thanks to Johan and helpers for an awesome day out!

Also to fellow riders who helped me through stages of arriving unprepared, to bush fixes...

- Albert for handing over brake pads (XTR, nogal  ), when on taking the bike out the car, I discovered the previous weekend's tri training mud derby (see pic) removed every last bit of brake material from my pads.

- George, Brett, Aubrey and some of the youngsters, for helping with tools, tube, chain links, pump, etc after SP2 took its toll on my rear rim and chain

- everyone else for a great vibe - none of that XC/roadie ego crap!

Great success not to have broken anything else, especially considering using a big-ass (21") 29-er XC bike and seeing that it CAN go downhill too - and the climbs were just a bit of a tri training warm-up  .

This was only my 2nd enduro after Mankele and after having so much fun and with the good vibe, I think I'll need to look around for a trail-ey bike now...
