Stuff on the bike is straight forward.

Here is other stuff that helps me:

1. Gym work - muscle balance must be good (quads, hamstrings and hip flexors)

2. Plymetrics (Jumps, stairs, etc) - NB only after at least a month in the gym.

3. Core/abs - Think of your core like a seat post. If it was not hard, your legs would have to keep you up and move you forward. If your core is strong/good, your muscles that do all the movement can do a better job...

4. Running - it does help keep the elasticity in your muscles.

Interestsing article jason, but I think a lot of BS!!

the writer seems to be swop what muscle groups get used for what cadence.

I believe that riding up a hill (under duress obviously) or trying to keep in a break or TTing on your own or hanging onto the back of the pack in a cross wind are all the same.... ride at the cadence (and the gearing) that is comfortable/ natural for you.

Similarly train in this way.

Only way to improve hills is to increase power or lose weight, which aren't necessarily achieved by spinning at a high cadence

A comprehensive, full body 1 min  training program designed to help the serious endurance athlete increase muscle strength & endurance.   Serious endurance athletes know that in order to get better in their chosen sport, whether it be cycling, swimming, running or triathlon, they need to  large volumes of sport specific training.

The 1min Training Program was developed to address this problem by offering serious endurance athletes an effective alternative to traditional 'gym-style' training programs. The 1min  program contained in this DVD offers you a 1 minute workout designed to be completed in a progression, allowing for a steady rate of overload and adaptation for maximum gains in muscle strength and endurance.

By the end of this 1min program, you'll achieve a peak level of full body muscular strength and endurance and be ready to set new PR's in your sport!

Good Luck

always try and ride one gear lighter than you used. that will build up legspeed slowly. Spinups also work. ride in 39x17 on flat and build cadence that maximus is reached almost after 1min. then go flatout for 15sec. try and focus on pedal stroke and dont bounce.

is this an exercise to increase leg speed or do you propose that one should 'always' ride in this manner?

Get to the track and spin those legs!

Clapeven if you don't get on the track. Spin spin spin. Everytime you get on your bike. Do a 3 hour ride, stay in the small ring, don't go lower than the 15/16. Repeat daily. Easy.
