I got a nice pack at nativesport when the new (2015) range came in. 2l pack for R800, which was in excess of R2000 a month before in the shops. Was roundabout Feb... just for what it's worth - it may not happen again!

But that's what I use. Friend of mine switched from Salomon backpack (shock and horror!) to a Camelbak Marathoner and he is super happy. Looks a very nice bag, sits snug and between the shoulders with very little movement. And he runs FAR! Some other friends uses Osprey bags... So there's a lot of options!

But for me nothing else comes close. You can take enough water along even for Paarl mountain on a summer day - and you have storage space. Very nice is you go to a chilly morning race with a long top, you just chuck it in the bag before the start! Try that with a belt... There's place for cell phone, tablets, a bottle with something else than water, plus obviously loads of storage for clothes, keys, etc.

Which one? And what went wrong!? (seeing that they cost R2k+...)

Thanks for the info. It is because of all the choices that I have turned to the knowledgeable Hub! I guess you will only really know if a vest suits you after you have run with it for a few km's - and by then it is too late to change your mind. I will have a close look at the brands and models you have mentioned, i.e. UltrAspire, Osprey and Camelback.

Anyone else use the Salomon 5L slab vest? I am looking into one

That's why I'm asking what went wrong ^^^. I've only heard good things about them (the Skin range), but they are really really expensive. Apparently they won't last as long (as my immortal Camelback) due to the lightweight / stretchy fabric.

I've asked him via a message which model it was and what the issues were. Will answer you when I get some detail. We're only meeting up again over the weekend - maybe more detail will emerge then.

Edit: From memory I recall he had a lot of hassles with storage space and reaching stuff on the go, for one thing. But will let you know when he responds - most likely only after work.

Sorry, I was merrily swinging the cat by the tail... confession time!

He previously also had a Camelbak, but got irritated by above-mentioned storage issues and a belt around the waist irritated him.

In the end he fitted both Salomon and the Camelbak Marathoner and preferred the latter (see, I had a point! :whistling:  ) purely due to cost. His words - it's almost exactly the same thing and the Salomon was rediculously expensive.

He mentioned "new Marathoner" so I don't know whether there was a previous version thereof that may have been different.

Think the "new one" is the blue and greenish model. I have the older blue and white one, don't think there are massive differences between the two versions
