I am doing Kremetart Cycle Race 2014 for the first time this year. Any tips and tricks?

How much climbing is there in each stage?

It goes up for the 1st 10kms or so, then nothing hillswise til stage 4 where there's a 3km hill, 10kms from the finish.

Tips?

Once you're over the mountains on Stage1, be in a bunch, and preferably one you're not struggling to stay with.

Usually the 2nd half of Stage 1 and all of Stage 2 is into the wind - despite their program notes and picture.

Get in the shade end of Stage 2, its usually hot at lunchtime.

Watch out for escaping Zimbabweans - usually coming from the right on Stage 2.

Last year the food at lunch was not great. Breakfast at the end of S1 is great. Snacks at end of S3 are also OK, and all you need at that point.

There is a tog bag truck. You are allowed to take one item per rider. My brother & I will share one tog bag, and one cooler box. Cooler box will have our lunch. Not going to take a chance again this year.

Race is great, and you will enjoy it.

I was unfortunately not fast enough to stick with the front of the bunch, and seemed to be stuck in no mans land quite a bit. We did have a small bunch at the start of S3, but when I took my turn at the front, I realised that I was on my own. Same for S4.

I am hoping that I will be closer to the front this year, and have some group.

The break between stages is enough to recover a bit, and start the next stage quite fresh.

There is normally a tail wing on S2 and a head wind on S3, but last year there was a head wind on S2. They had to delay the start od S3, as there were a lot of riders still out in S2.

A long weekend is not necessary. Drive in to Louis Trichardt on the Friday afternoon, enjoy the pasta dinner and drive back on the sunday.

The dinner on Saturday is great and quite festive. We were a little out of town and missed some of the fun, so we are now staying 5 min from the info centre

I find that climb on stage 3 to the finish is also a leg breaker

After doing this the Kremetart for the first time last year it became my favourite race on the calendar! I feel that I have not done nearly enough distance in training this year but I am seriously looking forward to it. One week left!
