General Epic GoPros

Morning Hubbers,

I have just bought a GoPro and am trying to figure out the best way to mount it for rides up Tokai and Jonkers. I note that many Epic riders have GoPros mounted on the front of their handlebars but with what seems to be a custom made holder rather than the GoPro handle bar mount. Anybody able to shed light on this or suggest an deal mounting?

Go to the Action Camera section on Classifieds, here on the Hub. You can get almost any adaptor available. I use a stem mount, handlebar mount or seat post mount. I ride with 2. Mount and enjoy.........ooh that sound wrong! lol

My plastic handlebar mount broke before I had a chance to use it on my bike, a friend has broken two. So go aluminium if you want to mount there.

I just ordered a few from fleabay.

Think there's a guy selling in the classifieds now, though.

I got mine from Extreme too. Great product and even better service. Bar mount, and camera, survived 2 huge wipeouts so far. Alu is def best!

Thanks all for the replies. This portal is the best. One question: Why handlebar mounts rather than helmet mounts? Wouldn't they be more stable? Can I please hear from hubbers who use helmet mounts?

more stable on the handle bar than your head. Your head goes all over the place.

I've been riding with the chesty and that works well for me, you get a nice view and hard to break the unit.

Don't want one on your helmet when you crash!!! Look at Schumacher (Helmet cam could have been a contributing factor).

 

Think they using something like this for Epic.

Go under one low branch and your camera and maybe your neck is gone. Also against UCI rules.

Chesty and helmet mounts definitely offer the best footage. The handlebar videos tend to be pretty boring.

I would definately go 3+ ( Battery life is far better ) Handlebar mount and Chesty is great. I have also used my short handlebar mount on my seatpost and that gives a great view of the rear wheel and following rider.

 

I know that Xtreme Industries sells GoPro 3+ housings so if you have a normal 3 Black you can reduce your physical size to that of a 3+ and all buttons function.

Already mentioned here...chesty is besty, followed by Helmet - side mount (so you get some fore ground perspective.....),.....reason for this is shake, rattle and roll......your head is the most stable part when riding and your neck absorbs a lot of the trail bumps, chest more or less the same, but the chesty must be TIGHT! Both give foreground object perspective...unlike handle bar or any other mount on the frame....almost all the movement of the trail through the frame and shocks is transferred to the mount which naturally has to be tight and therefore the camera bounces around a lot. Certainly don't rule it out as different perspectives and angles make for great post-shoot editing but for the main shot, HEAD or CHEST mount gives the most stable one...head shot can also include a front-mounted, backward facing extension arm looking at the rider or backwards looking at a following rider...needless to say these should be mounted with a weak-point break-away, in case you get into the bushes and it gets caught up!

IMHO, get the Black 3, prices have dropped, 3+ does offer slightly better battery life and sound quality easily overcome by getting another battery or external battery pack and most edits overlay music or other sound tracks anyway, low-light shooting is better in 3+ but how much riding are you going to do at night?...and you will find that the resolution vs FPS settings combo you will most likely use are the same on both cameras.

Edit: Try stay clear of SanDisk cards....lots of issues causing cameras to freeze (not sure if 3+ has sorted this out)...also whatever brand you do get it must get Class 10 to cope with transfer rates.
