Well my reasoning is as follows:-

1. It is safer

2. When the a second child arrives this may extend my tri career

3. In the long run you will save money - lower bike maintenance (no punctures / crashes)

4. You cannot be hijacked

I believe the future of cycling lies with indoor trainers and riding only races

I don't want to agree for obvious reasons but having recently signed with TrainerRoad.com it is amazing how effective indoor training with structure has become. Really impressed with what you can do indoors nowadays. Also with crime levels and crazy drivers on the road it makes more and more sense.

TR and some decent videos have made a huge difference to what I get out of the IDT. I still love riding road and MTB, despite the safety issues which worry the heck out of me. But when time or weather don't allow, or if I just want a rapid way to a pool of sweaty exhaustion, the IDT is unbeatable.

You can go to any store that sells Garmin watches and buy a separate ant adaptor. R1,000 +- (sportsmans warehouse)

Get the Suunto Movestick. I read the DC Rainmaker review and got

one. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2012/02/much-better-usb-ant-stick-for-your.html

Works like a charm once you get it the drivers installed. Was a bit of a pain with Windows 7. On one laptop it installed immediately with now hassls but on my spare laptop it took a while to sort it out. Think it was more user error...

And cheaper e.g.

If you really want to stick with Garmin, online prices seem less than R1K:

Not sure it's worth the extra money though

Guys just do your homework on these things. A few pointers...

If you go the Windows/PC route:-

1. You need Windows 8 for the Ant + route

2. If you go the Blue Tooth route you must have BT 4.0 or higher

In other words you need a new high end laptop or PC. Wahoo Kickr is Blue Tooth and NOT ant+.

The Ant + is basically for HR / Cadence and nothing more.

The easiest is to just go the Blue Tooth route.

Isn't it both garfield....ie pretty future proof and probably the best reason to purchase it. Doesnt matter which way the industry goes in a couple of years from now, you will support both.

PS if I was a betting man, I think Ant+ will still dominate due to it being entrenched so deeply and also it has a user group that is pushing for open protocol....but who knows.

Rouxtjie I saw the Wahoo stand in Clarens this past weekend and spoke to the guy. Seems its not ANT+ but Bluetooth only.

Either there are two kickr models out there(which I doubt) or the guy doesnt know his own product..and probably the product's biggest selling point

from dcrainmaker....

Pros:

- Open platform, others can develop against it

- Just works factor (never have to futz around with it)

- Supports both Bluetooth Smart and ANT+

- Noise levels are compatible to other trainers, lower in some cases

- Pricing is about $500 cheaper than CompuTrainer

- Pretty cool apps already coming out and available for it

Look at the table at the bottom where it compares trainers

When the Wahoo KICKR was announced last August, it was touted as being open on both Bluetooth Smart as well as ANT+. And in many ways it was. It was controllable via Bluetooth Smart, and apps could (and have been) designed for it. And it also outputted ANT+ data to various ANT+ devices.

However there was one little wrinkle: It didn’t allow ANT+ control, and required Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth 4.0). And that was of particular note to households which lacked a newer iPhone or iPad – which have been the only platforms that the KICKR supported control over. Without either of those two devices, your KICKR was effectively a big 46 pound brick.
