Rode Lowveld Quest now with a 1x10 setup.

34 front 11/36 on the back.

Much, much more climbing than S2C and much more muddy.

Your gear selection will depend on your strength.

Brand was on a 1x11 with a 10/42 cassette, he likes to turn a high cadence.

So in the end of the day,it's really rider dependent.

Luckily S2C is not that tough.

6 sani s for me, 1 on SS. 29er 34-17, pushed 3 sections on day two and one on day 3.

Currently ride 1 x 11, 34 up front. I really have no issues. All the 1 day racing I have done has been ok great on 34, even stepping to 36 for the faster stuff. The 32 is brand new in the box and might be on for multi-day racing.

As for multi-day MTB and Triathlon, they literally a world apart. Other than cardio, and teaching your mind to suffer the carry over is pretty small.

Did it last year on a 1x10, front 32t back 11-36t. Yeah of course I pushed up some hills but it was easier than I expected.

If I trained a bit more and was almost fit I would use a 34t front. You'll be fine.

if Hayley can do it the OP can do it too. I saw 2 young kids riding with XX1 as well. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Currently running a 32T 1 x11

I suffered on Day I of the Mountain Trophy.

Don't know if it was only due to the 32T.

Perhaps I should HTFU!

I will see one Day I how it goes (or not).

Does anyone know if the bike shops will have a 30t (94 cm bolt circle) available?

OK... I am not nearly as fit as you sound.. But.... I ride a 28-42 and 11-36 and on day 1 and day 3 I used 42 and 11 together a lot.. Even on day 2 actually... So you will lose that. Secondly on day 2 I used my 28 on the front on both sides of the nandos watering point and at least once or twice on a couple of the small steep bits of single track... You will likely get away with only one chain ring for those.. But I fear you will be spinning on the other end of the spectrum

How's the Q42/28 working in the front. Don't you have problems with shifting from small to big blade?

Thanks for the input friends, I am still undecided.

The chap who has invited me to partner him is a very competitive cyclist and I have been informed we are racing the event. He is very experienced at Sani and is dead set against the 1 x11. If I ignore his recommendation and struggle, I am looking for trouble I feel. I could ride what I have and just finish, but to race adds another dimension to the equation.

I have time I suppose.

I appreciate the input and your help

Ryan

I'm running 1x11 with 30T and love it but I always hated a front D so 1x11 works for me. I must ad it is harder between the gears (compared to 2x10)

  • an undeniable advantage of 1x11 is that your suspension performance is much more constant through the gearing range as the chainring torque value is constant due to a fxed gearing on the input side.

I have used 2x9 for 8 years. Never needed more gears but spare may be a problem in future so being trendy has advantages

Just done the J2C on SS and my female partner did it on 1x11, she's quite small and easily came right with a 32T and rode everything(refering to the last 3 days as per your question), I would recommend a 34T front chainring for any guy. The sani doesn't have really long gradient climbs even on day 2 and when would you use your granny gear anyways.

The 1x11 setup is awesome, less maintenance and very reliable, less weight, less that can go wrong with your front derailler as well(mud, cable stretch etc). The one difference between the gripshift and shifter option is the with gripshift you can go from top to bottom or visa versa in one movement which eg. replaces the option with 2x10 of dropping the chain to the small chainring when approaching a climb. I don't think the normal 1x11 shifters will allow you that.

1x11(x01 or xx1) is the way to go, as I said we did the J2C with them without any hicups what so ever!!!

Just to add...you won't save 150g, think about it. You save the following, front shifter, cable and derailleur. The gripshift is super light. Then front crank is carbon(both xo1 and xx1) plus you loose the extra screws of the FD needed for the 2nd or 3rd chainring, then a 11 spd chain which is thinner, RD which is much lighter in both options and the one piece cassette weight. You save much more than 150g and a lot of hassles/maintenance of a whole separate front shifter and FD. You cant go wrong!

both setups will work well. I would choose the 1x11, but if both riders use thw same equipment you can carry less spares, or have better redundancy.

All I'm thinking with the amount of emphasis you are already.putting on it is:

I hope you don't fall and break something, and I hope you don't get sick. race over, just like that. .
