ITU World Triathlon Series Cape Town 26-27 April

I still have not received a reply to my enquiry re road closure, but I have figured it out by driving around the course on the weekend and looking at the signage. Its a mixed bag with some full closure and some single lane closure.

No one seems clear if TT bikes are allowed. After some reading on the interwebs it seems that TT bikes are allowed for age groupers doing the non drafting event, I only looked in respect of the Olympic Distance race

I found the competition rules on the ITU website...

http://www.triathlon...highlighted.pdf

The key rule is

5.1.2 d)(ii) For draft-illegal races, the following rules on handlebars apply:

 Only handlebars and clip-on bars not extending beyond the leading edge of the front wheel will be permitted. Clip-on bars in two pieces do not need to be bridged. All tube ends have to be plugged.

It also seems that your Tri bike needs to be UCI legal, ie the new Felt DA, P5 (with deep fork and fairing), Shiv with fuselage and a few other bikes are not legal for the race.

I take no responsibility if I am wrong. Please make up your own mind, if you want to be 100 % sure then take a road bike, there is not going to be much more than a few minutes difference anyway. Personally I am going to rock my tri bike, still deciding on that aero helmet though.

Come on help a brother out, nothing wrong with manufacturing a bit of an advantage for myself

Thinking a MTB may be quickest if congestion gets as bad as expected...

One way of guaranteeing clear "road" ;)

I think you are 100% right, you also wouldn't want slick tyres, that's for sure, road surface is terrible.

Given the lack of available info on this race, I have lost enthusiasm for it. Will be there but as a spectator.

I hope the race is better organised than the website which really is a triumph of form over function.

Posted a whole lot of questions on the Facebook page and got a one line answer.

Stunning that there is no link to the rules on the race website.

Shucks.....coming down from PE for which I thought would be a great event. Not so sure now. Think its safest just to load my road bike get the race over with as fast as possible and then hit the pub hard afterwards.

There actually is a link to the ITU site triathlon.org in the top right of the CT site, the rules are under the athlete info, so it is there, just really, really badly positioned. These guys do themselves no favours with the way that they present (or dont) critical info, they can learn from WTC and their athlete guides.

It is understandable that a few guys are put off by the lack of info, but I am still really excited about this one. By all accounts the ITU events are pretty amazing, the course looks fantastic, I think the crowd support will be good and its going to be a really fast course. I am most of all just looking forward to enjoying my last tri before a relaxing winter.

Don't forget to watch the likes of Brownlee and Gomez running at warp speed (> 32 min) after klapping a 40 average for 40k's

Yup, you and I can find it but does every athlete have to go hunting. Even on the ITU site, it is not obvious.

There actually is no confirmation that these are the rules that apply. What amendaments to these rules are in place. eg MTBs are allowed but will contravene the bike width limitation. I asked a whole lot of questions on the FB page and have got answers that differ from the ITU site.

There are some serious athletes participating in a World Series event, you can't not have official rules. They are treating it like it is a fun ride.

Anyway, was going to pack up my bike and enter today but think am just going to come watch the elites.

Probably the one and only time you will ever get to race a triathlon in this area.

That alone is a reason to do it.

Pack the bike, come enjoy the race and then enjoy a beer while watching the pro ladies race a bit after :)

my initial reaction was the same - race at the waterfront - how cool.

Then I looked at the course and realized I would be paying R1000 to run 4 circles where I train 80% of the time.

I might still change my mind though

I will be having that beer while you are racing.

Will go run the course on Weds or Thurs night. Down there from tomorrow.
