Typical carbon repair

This is not a question but more to give you guys and gals an idea of the processes of a typical repair on a carbon frame. Obviously im not going to show you all the steps as a man has to keep some trade secrets a secret :w00t:

 

So here is a typical crack on a seat stay after a crash...

As you will see the crack goes through underneath the cable guide which will have to be removed to do a proper repair. Next picture shows the guide removed and the crack opened up and a good few layers of carbon removed.

The carbon is then built up with more layers than what was removed to the point where the new carbon actually stand proud of the original carbon. Once that is cured it is sanded down by hand to blend into the original carbon. The next pic will show the area sanded and the original cable guide to be offered up to its original position.

Everything is now prepped to restore the paintwork to original spec. The next pic shows the stay all repaired and paintwork finished.

There you go. Good as new and ready to shred the trails again.

BIG UP TO BOGUSONE! I just had my carbon Trek repaired and to say it was an incredible job is an understatement. The repaired pieces (yes pieces, more than one :( ) are stronger than ever. And the paint touch up afterwards was nothing short of immaculate! Took the frame back to my LBS so that they could build it back up and they could not tell where the frame had been repaired...this after they had taken it apart so I could get it repaired.

Well done, any idea on what caused the damage?

Usually expect the chainstay to break notthe seatstay.

 

No idea. Didnt ask but normally the seatstay is damaged in that area by the rear derailleur believe it or not.

Side (direct) impact from a crash

Trying to picture that, only way is if the hanger breaks and it's "flicked" against the seatstay.

The usual chainstay damage is chainsuck or rock damage.
