Well that's the problem, too much choice and getting it wrong can be expensive but I get your point.

Mainly ride rietvlei as it's local for me.

I've found that Gauteng trails don't really justify the super aggressive tyres that the WC riders use, unless you hang out at places like Hakahana.

A combo that I was riding for a long time was a Spez Ground Control up front, with an Ardent at the back. Suited my riding.

There are a few brands that are always a safe bet, with a number of outliers. Each tyre has it's pros and cons - short list a few options and then do some research on each.

True but the aggressive tires just look super cool and make you feel confident..hahaha

Will short list as suggested and then do some research. Thanks

Maybe you gents can help re tire pressures.

On the PWC Corp Challenge I lost a brand new Spez Fasttrak Control 2.00 on a rocky downhill section. 1cm cut, running from tread to rim, so I don't think that is a pinch, as my understanding is that a pinch would cut the wheel along the sidewall. (hope that makes sense).

Question is re recommended tyre pressures. I weigh 87-90kg, and normally run 1.5 on the front & 1.6bar on the back, as per handheld digital gauge. Have never had a sidewall cut with these pressures.

I have also never had 2.00 tires on a 29r before, but a hubber had them on a set of wheels I bought, so just left them on.

a) Was I unlucky?

b) have I just been too lucky?

c) are tires too low for my weight?

I have always used the thinking from 4x4 driving that in rocky terrain, one drops air pressure... even though the driving is a lot slower & more controlled, than going downhill on a bicycle...

Tks

Was it the Control or Grid casing? Spez tyres generally have very floppy sidewalls.

Either way, the pressures sound a tad too low.

Control.

Is Grid tougher?

I actually like Spez tires, because I am a bit of a cheap skate... Tires of choice are Renegades Control 2.3

What's the principle around pressure and tyre volume? Wider tyres can take lower pressure, but by how much?

I weigh 95kg and run my Gomas at 1.6bar up front. It's a 29x2.4.

It still feels like to can go lower though?

Yes. Grid is the sturdier casing.
