Starting to really get nervous when reading last years thread. This will be my first 70.3 in East London and I am, at this stage SH*^&%NG myself!

I did TriRock Durban at the beginning of October and Global Eleven in November. Due to life happening, my last long ride was at the end of November. Since then I have only done a few session on the trainer. I have done a fair bit of running since and I did a half marathon this Saturday and improved my PB by 9 minutes. I am also confident with the swimming. It is just the bike that freaks me out.

At this stage I am doubting whether I should even start.

Please Please, a few words of encouragement.

Thanks

dude, don't even think of not starting..

let me tell you my training since feb last year..

3 swims in total since Feb 2014, 750m pool, 1250m pool, 1500m openwater

average of about 10km per week run

average of about 100km per week bike (if that)

I am going to go do it as a jol and if it hurts, so be it, just going to count my blessings that I can get out and do these kinds of things..

suck it up, man up and see you on the start line :-)

The run is where it happens and it sounds like you have running under control.

Rest, recover from the pb effort, eat and drink on the bike while enjoying the ride / view at a easy pace, then klap the run again.

Don't get caught up in nervous talk before the race. The bike is challenging but it isn't the Alpe D"Huez. It is only challenging because you have a 21k run afterwards in possible hot conditions with a cheeky little hill at the turn around. If you rode it as a Saturday morning ride you'd have a braai and few beers afterwards no problem. I honestly think people just get caught up in the adrenaline of racing, attack the bike/try to keep up with all the "knopkuite" passing you and then pay the price on the run.

Wear a HR monitor, pace yourself on the bike (66% of FTP or roughly 83% of your LT) and enjoy the scenery and atmosphere (or even the seriously hot women riding past you if that's what it takes to relax a little )

Dude, not starting is not an option. Did my first 70.3 last year and had the worst build up. Injured my foot quit badly (playing touch rugby, facepalm i know) the monday before the race. went to see the doctor and he took some x-rays, luckily no stress fracture so it was just badly bruised. Went for a few treatments during the week just get it to a point where i could step on it. The friday night i woke up with some stomach issues and spent some time next to the throne. Spent the saturday hydrating as much as possible, strapped the foot on sunday and started the race. 10 km into the bike leg i even got stung by n bee (just felt a sting on my arm and then saw a bee stuck on it). With all of that said it was one awesome experience and i really dont have anything negative to say about the weekend, only remember the positive stuff(and there is a lot of it). I finished in 8h, but that was a decision i made the week before, that i will do what is required and enjoy the race and not worry about my time. It took a lot of pressure of me and i really just enjoyed the event, the atmosfeer, the people on the side, going past friends on the run, etc.

Just make sure you know what is required to finish the different legs and hydrate properly so you dont start cramping (this was important for me as i sweat a lot and with everything that happened during the week) and that you will be ready for afterparty.

You can't not start

I had a pretty hectic first 70.3 - sprained my ankle, had shin splints and other issues - but still finished (which was the aim as a first timer)  If anything its an awesome day out.  Just chill on the bike and enjoy it

Eventful start to the drive up to EL. Dude fell asleep behind wheel, cut across our lane, went off the road and flipped the car over a plough. Looking at the state of the car it is incredible that he is in an ok condition.
