The last frame I bought I checked out the origin before I bought and I breathed a sight of relief when I saw it was hand made in Taiwan. Wouldn't want a bicycle made anywhere else.

Niner are now fully invested in manufacturing in Vietnam, apparently. Moving from Taiwan. Which is an interesting move.

Currently have 3X morewoods and I love them. (have had 5 in total).

But when one says "locally manufactured are they referring to made in SA or just a company based in SA?

Because the likes of Momsen, Contraband, and some of the Morewoods are made in the far east.

There are not many SA manufactured bikes or components.

QuickRock BB is all manufactured in SA except for the ceramic balls.

I have played with a similar material before and it is widely used in the mining industry due to its self lubricating properties.

Very easy to machine but rather pricey and can be heavy.

Stephen - I se you guys are out in Kempton.

Just give us an idea of weight and price. Guess we can do Hub and suspension bearings then too?

Check out the website for pricing. www.quickrock.net for the ceramic range you are looking at R950.00 which is far cheaper than any other brand. Yes we are curently working on various projects , head sets , pedals and pivot bearings ext.

Jip, the Taiwanese make some excellent products. TBH i'd much rather trust them to manufacture critical components than the local labor force.

Nothing wrong with Morewood and Momsen,in fact awesome bikes. They are "manufactured" in the East but designed etc locally.

Not all Morewoods.

As far as I know, only the Kwela, Zula, Jabula, and Sukuma were outsourced.

The Makulu, Kalula, Zama, Izumu, Shova, Mbuzi, Ndiza, Enza, and Zuza... all local.

Interesting, first time I've heard of Quick Rock. Do you use their BBs?

yip! to be fair i am the owner of QuickRock so yes i do ride them. That is why i asked the question on would you support a local manufacturer.

So i guess you are Stephen from quickrock? Please tell us a bit more about the bb's, if its not using bearings what does it use? And how does it work. Prices etc.

Our BB system still uses bearings but has a fail safe built into it. we refer to it as a secondary bearing. Should your bearing seize up while you are riding then it will automatically start running on the dust cap which is manufactured from high wear resistant , self lubrication polymer. you can ride on and will not even notes that your bearings have seized. in the testing done over the last two years we could get between 3000km and 5000km on the dust caps alone. The other feature is our sealing system.
