Majik Forest is not safe - they are going to close it. a tag system will be the only way we could get access.

Criminal could care less if you have tag or not - he certainly won't have a one and fence is not going to tag him.

How is it not safe?

It is not privately owned land like the rest of the Tygerberg MTB trails. It is open to all, including vagrants. There have been several reported muggings, bike jackings. One vagrant murdered another vagrant there in 2012. Could easily have a cyclist or runner. There often booby traps, ie fishing line spun between two trees, to knock cyclists off their bikes. A friend of mine recently came across this again.

Nooit!! Yoh, I have been lucky then, never come across anything untoward when riding there.

criminals can get in anywhere and anytime. proper security however does reduce the risk factor. The risk will still be there with locked gates, but it will be smaller.

And you have no escape route!

you will need to make your way to one of the gates either way, and attacks more than likely happen quite a distance from the gates. So if you're lucky to make it to a gate, you will have a tag to get out.

I live on the border of the Majik Forest and sometimes bike there too, though probably not as enthusiastically as the rest of you. So I understand your concerns. But this is what I have to deal with every day. Yes, they're fighting. And screaming. And urinating within plain sight while I'm trying to relax at home.

And I guarantee you, if it were any of you living here, you'd feel the same.

Yes, going to the Spar and getting an access tag is a bit of effort, but worth the effort to get the Majik Forest back into the state it once was.

At the moment it is JUST A PROPOSAL according to the article, until that becomes a reality you can't close of all but 3 gates.

No point in leaving one or two gates open. Lock them all. I am sure many will be willing to pay for a tag, for their own safety and preserving the forest.

They can't, as it's a public open space.

Even if they do at night only, AFAIK they've already made holes in the fence

SUGGESTION: For proper security purposes, suggest you keep all gates locked at all times and have a tag access system in place at the main gates as mentioned under point 1. I am sure I speak for many others but for me as a very frequent user of the Majik Forest trails, I am happy to pay for a tag.

The tag system is the system that is proposed. That's what they mean by "solar powered access control". So thanks for your support of this proposal.

But what are the time frames for the proposal?

What about the access gates till it's implemented? Currently we're not allowed to use certain areas, meaning MTBers finish with effectively a dead end and backtrack up the singletrack

What of right to FREE access to PUBLIC spaces, using one would have to register and PAY for an access tag?

there's a clear line here between the riders and the residents nearby. meanwhile, back in reality, the perps dont give a damn either way. Law is after all, only for the law abiding.

Decreasing access actually creates more space for the 'unwanted elements', especially those looking for a place to stay. I'm sure they'll appreciate the access control to their new safer haven.

Its an interesting dilemma.
