Permit for table mountain?

This is an email received from Hilton Blomeris, Head of Visitor Safety at TMNP.

Dear All

We will be conducting these compliant visible policing permit checks on a weekly basis as there are numerous dog walkers and mountain bikers (locals) not in possession of the My Activity permit, we have on numerous occasions warned dog walkers and mountain bikers that it is a requirement to purchase a MY ACTIVITY permit.

Regards

Hilton.

So we will prosecute rogue mountainbike riders and wayward dogwalkers but muggers can have free reign.

Maybe we should insist that TMNP institute an activity card for muggers too seeing how active they are!

Maybe that way they will catch more of them.

Those that allow themselves to be policed get policed into oblivion. It's the way of the world.

I realise I am ranting this afternoon, it feels to me like this should be more appropriate in the active "Mugged and Robbed" thread, because that's how I generally feel when I see a Sanparks official, one feels guilty until you have proved you are legitimate.

I will also just add that they move very very quickly when it suits them. For example the track they cut at Rhodes Mem to ensure we no longer go past their offices and that we are diverted away. They did that with no reference to NEMA, an EMP, in/ over a watercourse and found all the budget and signage at the drop of a hat. Because it suited them.

* the views expressed her are my own!

Sharp, and good that you point this out!

You ride illegally and I Will find you!!!

You will be fined!

Another group will ban you from events - for three years nogal!

Better to dope - only two year ban.

I think all this is valid, and a lot of what's going on is just frustration from all sides. So here is a challenge to SANpark, why not have a mid year special all permits half price, reckon almost every rider walker will be happy to buy a R220 permit, set up at Rhodes mem gate, and make a day off it.. Make an effort to actually engage with the cyclists!

Like SANParks care, give them a year or two, just to say yes or no!

M. Frustrating for sure. Thing is this stuff does need to be controlled. We can't just ride whenever and wherever we want for free anymore. There's just too many of us to go unnoticed.

If we want more and better quality trails and be taken seriously as a community by land owners we have to respect their wishes and rules. Try being on the other side of the fence having poured hundreds of your own hours and thousands of your own rands into trails only to be told "f%&k off. I've been riding here for years" whilst standing NEXT to the land owner.

Sanparks officials' attitudes aside if it's a requirement to have a permit to ride in a certain area then that's a rule we have to abide by.

I have no issue with permits.

I do have an issue when they are increased by R70 per year for the past two years.

I do have an issue if we get nadda in return and get policed

I do have an issue if you don't engage with us and to get things done is a major issue.

And my puppy is cuter.

This is EXACTLY the kind of attitude that have already lost us some trails (think Kliprug in the Durbanville Hills). :(

Ja. I don't think a reasonable person could disagree with you on that.

There is nothing stopping anyone asking San Parks about their permit policies. Perhaps hundreds of cyclists asking could cause a shift?

wont they turn to you any way as you are the rep for the front of the mountain? They already using the 'social media' excuse. Maybe run a survey using your website as a launchpad, along with the hub and FB to gather as much public opinion on the matter, and submit that to parks.
