The Vasbyt and DH3 trails are in the area I've circled (now you know why I'm not an artist) The yellow is the proposed new trail. I think the crude arrow I've made is what lefty is referring to as blue gums. not 100% sure tho.

actually what I am refering to is in the bottom right quadrant of the green bit you circled. Let me see if I can draw it in in red somehow. I think we may be taking about the same thing but that long yellow marked trail starting at blue gums and running all the way down and rejoing vasbyt near the bottom essentially looks like it.

circled in red is the section I think we're both talking about Omega man.

It was called blue gums / Xc divert / XC bombhole and various others and was also diverted slightly over the years but it last in active use AFAIK in about 2001.

I moved abraod after that so have no idea what happened there between June 2001 and 2004

There are some great ling term solutions being proposed but nothing for the immediate future.

Is it possible to create a shortish divert from where Vasbyt splits (for the bridge) and have it take people up to the start of Bluegums?

I must say I like the proposed trail, as it solves the safety issue and makes use of some awesome real estate to the north of Vasbyt. I walked that section once when I had a puncture, and it really does have huge potential.

With the now volume of mountain bikers in Tokia (and SA in general), there is no good reason as to why the trails where riders are carrying speed (being DH specific and or general trails) should be allowed to be bi-directional. It is dangerous!

No amount of fancy signage or being courteous or any of that "nice" stuff is going to stop a big f^&king accident happening! Single direction trails will be the only way you can safely keep the traffic apart.

The time to act is immediate, you need to act now TokiaMTB! If nothing else that this incident is underlining, your hand is now being forced to act, because come that big accident with the "wrong" people involved will see massive medical costs, legal implications between involved parties, the potential legal implications that will drag in users land owners local government etc.... and then what? The closer of another Cape Town trail?

All the red tape, EMP and all that other other stuff will amount to NOTHING if this gets embroiled into in a legal issue or heaven forbid, the death of a rider.

its even quicker to erect a sign advising no climbing up the trail until further notice. it sux, but its safer. But no, a temporary sign cannot be expedited.

yet that barbed wire sign drawn across the DH track by the loggers was done chop-chop.

what a load of manure.

As with most red tape in this country, it is quicker to DO and say sorry when you get a slap on the wrist, than to wait for due process to follow

Fact is, that as many people calling for one-way here, there are just as many wanting bi-direction. The trail was set as one-way until I got a call from Parks and the consensus they found among many other users was to keep this trail catering as a climbing track until we could secure a dedicated option. Almost a year has passed so it is time to revisit the problem.

Moretrails, you are right, mostly.. you are wrong to think we don't know this already.. but what you say is spot on.

Let's see of this can't be fast-tracked through Parks. Sensitive issue so don't be surprised if it means Jeeptrack for everyone.. but a solution is needed.

I've had near misses too, my shirt has a gaping hole in it from clipping a pedal of a rider in mid corner.

the section i have circled in red in Post #35 exists. It just needs to be cleaned up. Lets talk to them about reopening this option Deon. It kills two birds with one stone.

From road/old pallet jump downward - down only - that section is too smooth and fast now (love it!)

Can leave the upper section two way.

Just DO it! before we have an incedent.

Had near miss on that section last week - velly close.

Agree with this suggestion and it is how our group ride up!

The incident has already happened - last year June 2013!

Just after the boardwalk - I just missed the guy coming up - I moved left, luckily he "sort of" moved right! Unfortunately, he moved back into the path, my brother following me collected him - end result - my brother broke his collar bone - not cool!

One temporary solution would be to errect a sign informing riders to scream STRAVA before entering each blind/ unsighted section on the way down.

If someone screamed Strava at me I'd probably collapse from laughter.

What vegetation is growing on the lower part of Vasbyt? Is it alien? All I can recall is that it is tall and blocks vision up and down the trail. The mid to upper sections have much shorter growth.
