Gonna wait see if I can't get a solo entry on the cheap, couple weeks before.

So many HUBBERS I know only do stage races that way, train hard and wait for last min bails, litterally ;)

I speak from the opposite position the amount of "freebies" I've dumped due to injury, work being sick is crazy

You are almost guaranteed getting a cheapie entry

How difficult will I make it for myself if me and my partner don't quite get along?

Once you get seeded in your batch of your strength I can almost guarantee you, you will ride with your "new group/fellow sufferers " the whole time, you will make mates as you go along, you will eat together, ride together, shower "together" come in at the end of the day the same time, you quickly find "mates" to help you along, we met the coolest couple from England chatted raced each other and supported each other, and you will meet plenty HUBBERS 9/10 times brilliant guys/ladies you don't even chat to on a day to day basis

Thanks that makes sense. What I actually meant was that if I enter with someone and we don't quite get along from the start, how crap is the 9 days going to be overall bearing in mind I have to ride with him everyday and spend the afternoons with this person as well?

Ride a few one day marathons together and see how you get along in a race situation.  But I wouldn't worry too much, the vibe at these type of stage races (sani, berg&bush, joberg2c etc) is very laid back, and so if you and your partner get along on a personal level it will not matter that much if one is fitter than the other.

if you dont have a solid partner that you both 100% on the same page as far as training fitness and comfortable with I PERSONALLY WOULDNT PULL A 9 DAY STAGE RACE, rather ride solo and have a blast, you could end up hating 8 days of mountain biking, some people dont react well to being "pushed" out of their comfort corner,,,,

do a few loooong rides push the guy to his limit and check is he going to lift you when your spirits are down or is he going to drag you down a hole with him,,,,,,nine days is loooong i dont think i can do 9 full days with the misses   OK I KNOW I CANT :whistling:  :whistling:

Thats the problem... Riding together is not a problem

If can't get along for 9 days off of the bike I wouldn't be doing 9 days on the bike and in confined spaces with the person, you may just ruin your experience...so not worth it imo! My take on doing things like this is that it should almost be a bonding experience with your partner, if it goes the other way you'll be in for a whole world of hurt and i'm not talking about on the bike...

I really enjoy the nice routes on stage races like these, but I have to say that 50% or even more of the experience is the socialising, conversations and beer in the afternoons/evenings.  So I will rather do a stage race with a slow partner who is my friend, than with a fast guy who irritates me.

4 LINES SUMS UP THE QUESTION    AGAIN IF YOU BOTH ON THE SAME PAGE AS TO THE "PLAN" OF HOW THE RACE/RIDE IS GOING TO GO

I would say - find a new partner....

You have to consider that over 9 days, you will have bad times (maybe many) and having a partner who will either help or encourage you to keep moving is a great benefit.

Remember - one small upset stomach, and you might need to look them in the eye again the next day... best you get on ok, and have a sense of humour on hand..... at all times.

I would not change my partner for low 7 figures in cash.... might consider it, but probably not....
