I guess that they want to see the whole bike to ensure that it wasn't crushed by a truck or whatever, so they can be sure that this isn't crash damage

I think these pictures taken by the guy that spotted the crack provided enough evidence that it was not caused by anything malicious. Just plain and simple metal fatigue.

i sell clutches(obviously a completly different product), but its a fair ask to see the product you wanting to get replaced,

if your tv breaks do you phone deons and say, "hey its broke send one"

also if we supply a failed part there are many factors influencing failure, so we want to see the unit as a whole to establish cause of failure

Sounds like you need to get the frame back, reassemble the bike and take some pics for them! That will give them a good indication of whether the damage was from abuse or manufacturing fault I guess? Maybe you replaced the old crank because you had smashed it against a rock and that resulted in the damage to the frame? Not saying that's what actually happened, but people try warranty claims for incredible things so I'm sure they are just being careful...

I guess they want a picture of the whole bike cracked and all. A picture of the whole bike before the crack appeared isn't any help for them to investigate the cause of the crack

I agree that should be good enough, is the dude that spotted the crack a bike mechanic or someone of good standing, (not like DIPSLICK for example), a statement or affidavit from him may carry some weight

They have the frame, and they can see by looking at it that it has no other damage whatsoever. I offer to provide the wheels, handlebar and seat post that was fitted and they want to know nothing of it.

The fact is they provided the frame, it broke after a few months so I send the frame back. They can do with it whatever they like and I am sure it will provide them with whatever answers they need to their questions.

Is that a dent in the other tube in your 1st pic?

No, it is welding.

Yes - he is my new bike mechanic and the best I have had so far from the 4 I tried on Stellenbosch.

Although not applicable in Roux's case you do raise a good question, people often ride a size down for better handling, lower weight etc... its possible that a small frame isn't meant for for a 6'6" juggernaut especially some of the lightweight brands.

A crack is almost always caused by an initiation point/stress raiser. In this case the crack started at the weld. I would guess the cause to be poor welding practice.
