I see there are various shapes and types of earplugs. I've never needed to use something like this, so would appreciate some advice on what to get?

K@k advice. Always bring a pillow. I don't want to sleep on smelly, uncomfortable clothes.

bring 2 towels with. Stuff with dry one, alternate.

Or alternatively you can bring a pillow, Oak Valley is a few minutes away from malls & shops, no need to go all survivor mode

Prepared for what? Torrential rain? Wind? Snow?

That seems to be the million dollar question...

After getting some wiseguy replies to my question yesterday, I see the 'peculiar' forecasts have made other okes take note too.

What's so strange to me is that the two websites (YR & Windguru) can have such different forecasts, while both of them are renowned to be very accurate. BOTH can't be right, because they're forecasting completely different things.

Anyway, guess I'll be rooting for YR to be correct & looking out for a news article reporting on the meteorologist for windguru having lost his job for smoking pot on duty.

Or windguru quicker to update than YR today. If YR changes this afternoon to deluge as well! then we got issues.

If you've got space in your bag - bring your pillow.

No need to get rude...

Yr is the most reliable IMHO...

If you okes have got a W2W bag you can fit 2 pillows, a sleeping bag, 3 sets of cycling kit, your wash kit, 2 towels, iPad and a whole load more into it. I don't understand the space problem... And it has back straps to help you lug it around.

That's my race tactic...be comfortable

Weathersa also says big rain on Monday, and I find it normally accurate from a few days out

Yip, seems rain pretty much a sure thing. It is what it is. Might need the ear plugs on the ride, never mind the tent.

I would suggest buying a couple of different ones, they are so cheap & see what works best for you. The ones I got for last year didn't help me at all, also practice sleeping with it in your ears now already as it might just irritate you on your first attempt & you find yourself not sleeping at all.

My first W2W, and it's going to be a slog for me, even in perfect conditions. Believe me, I have checked every single weather forecast that I can find - I think we're in for a very tough day 1 of the Ride. I could cry....but it is what it is. Any tips for riding in wet weather??

Strongest wind I ever raced in to date. The portage is a nightmare but the rest of the route is great with a lot of singletracks. Race village is amazing.

Lets see what day 2 holds

Good grief man, suddenly our rain forecast for the ride isn't seeming so bad. Well done!

Rule 5. Will also be my first W2W so no idea what the ground and soil is like. Here in KZN, we get lots of clay type mud in the rain and that sticks to everything.

Generally just keep smiling. Accept that you in for a longer day. It's the same for everyone in the wet. Try not put strain on a jammed up drivetrain by changing gears too much under tension. Spin a slightly easier gear when you can. Make sure you are warm enough. Wet is OK, but wet and cold can get unpleasant.

Today was great, wind was howling, portage was ok-ish not quite as bad as I thought, lots of climbing and single track was absolutely awesome.

Race village is wow! Looking fwd to Day 2, apparently there is lots of single track fun and less climbing.

Started cycling beginning of the year, so all fairly new and challenging, but this is a great experience!
