MTB Brakes

Yeah I would use whatever brakes were given to me for free as well.. even Avids...

If you read my post again you will see that I did not imply that the top riders select their components. I just mentioned that although Shimano is not the best brakes according to some, they still make components good enough for the highest level, which is a fact nobody can argue against.

Each brand will have its drawbacks, whether it is availability of parts, serviceability, aesthetics, type of fluid and performance. The rider needs to select which cons he can live with, pick his poison and ride the hell out of it.

I had a set of the first Hopes that came out - superb quality and feel but pads were made of unobtainium.

I prefer mineral oil to Dot fluid as it is less damaging to paint, carbon bars etc. It also does not absorb water in storage. So Shimano it is for me now.

As for modulation - well all I ever need is gentle to about 1/3 of my index finger strength on each side.

Compared to Dot fluid and constant alignment shifts on Juicy sevens I had for a few years I am much happier with Shimano.

Have not tried Codes or Guides tho.

I'm always amused by the aversion to dot fluid as a reason not to use Avids. Motor vehicle brakes get FAR hotter, and yet dot is still used there in abundance. Just use the right stuff, and prep the areas properly. You shouldn't be pouring the stuff onto the brake lever / caliper anyway, but if you do there are ways and means of preparing the surface properly.

DOT is water soluble as well so as soon as you spill it, you wash it off. Not like it eats paint on contact...

The problem is when it leaks on a ride....and you have to keep riding. Or you only notice it some time after. Seen leaking pistons and joints on several friend's bikes.

When bleeding I always wrap rag or papertowel around the reservoir anyway to catch any spills.

After more trail-orientated brakes - but seem more scarce. Keep on coming back to XTs.

Considering a set of XTs can be got for 2.5K, what can you get equivalent price in the Avid range? Trail Elixir 9s and the Codes are much more expensive, no?

I've just bought a set of Guide RS's for 2k5. Chain reaction. KILLER price.

If you've got leaking brakes, it's not the fluid's fault. Plus you have FAR more problems than just dot vs mineral to worry about if you get it on the pads and discs.

If I had more time to wait for OS imports I would - currently only have a rear brake so need to sort it out asap :/

That makes TWO of us.

I have Formula 1 brakes, wish I had XT.

EVERYONE wishes they had XT.... even the guys who are into fat chicks...

Nah. I actually don't. I was thinking of it, then realised that they look cheap with that chome-plated plastic cover on the levers...

Then I saw what the Guides were going for on CRC, and then that was the end of my flirt with shimano.

I still have a set on my other bike - Deore level, old style, but they're just not the same.

I'm busy on my build planning for my new ASR-C... actually thinking of going Guides just to see for myself...  never know until you try them...
