Mountains = dual suspension preferably min of 125mm travel.

Sweeping statements like these are not helpful. There is no reason why someone who isn't even sure of what kind of riding he wants to do (and thus will not be dropping into a gnarly double black rock garden with waist-high drops) needs a long-travel (or even medium-travel) bike. He needs something which will serve him well across what he'll most likely be doing: riding jeeptrack with a little bit of easy singletrack thrown in. Something like an Anthem is perfect for that.

You mis-read his post.

He is not sure what kind of riding he wants to do but seems open to giving a gnarly downhill or singletrack a good go - he needs an all rounder. Says that he lives close to the Drakensberg - HOW are you going to keep him from those.

He says "then I decide I like AM or Enduro"

mmmmm.....

"My reasoning is that I want to be able to climb faster, do longer rides and have an overall lighter bike.I would also want to in future do some stage rides like Sani2C."

Stop telling porqui's...

Sorry, I just really wanted to say that!

As you were!

The climb faster and bike being lighter I inherited from road cycling and I see now that it might not be relevant for mtb-ing.

Stage racing is something I would like to do in the future, a Sani2C or an Epic would be awesome and I want something now that I would be able to cycle various terrains with.

There is just too much options and I admit I'm very confused......

I called a couple of shops now and the Anthem seems like a good deal, the normal price is R25k

Got to go sell my Hardtails right now, lol... And I dont ride anything except singletrack/trails/DH...

All my bikes are hardtails at the moment

My advice is buy the one that looks the best/most apealing, as that is the way you'll probably be riding, haha

Well there we have it...it seems you have found your bike you want....the giant anthem. very capable bike that, hope you enjoy it.

Rule one...ride the bike you want to ride, not what other people think you should.

The closest you are going to come to a one bike quiver that will keep your options open would probably be a long travel 29er with a slightly more relaxed geometry. Something like a pyga 110 or a spez stumpjumper or a tallboy LT comes to mind, plus a few others in that genre. You're aiming for around 120-130 rear travel and a head angle around 69 degrees.

The pyga pedals well and is well represented in stage races, though probably not right at the very front, but at the same time is also being used to win enduros.

If you don't come right budgetwise with one of these options, the anthem is a great bike and excellent value (I'm talking about the 29er, can't speak for the 27.5, though I'm sure the same applies), and very versatile. In fact so too is the trance, though I'd imagine this would be slightly hard going on 70-80 km rides. Whatever you get, stick on a dropper post as soon as you can afford the upgrade or negotiate for it up front.

The point of this thread was not advice on what brand of bike to buy but rather to spark a debate on what type of bike. The anthem was just one bike that caught my eye.

100mm vs hard tail vs 150+ mm travel bikes...

When i visited my LBS the first thing they asked me is what type of riding i do and I didn't know and then but after some google searches asked that same question here

What I think I should have asked was what is the most fun or what is the most popular

And please no downhill riding I think that is way too extreme..
