Brake modification help.

A friend of mine has lost two fingers of his left hand in a paragliding accident. He is an avid mountain biker and is struggling to control his braking. Any of you know of a modification to control both front and back brakes off of a single lever? It would be important to be able to adjust the braking ratio between front and back brake. Any help appreciated!

Looks like it may be possible with cable brakes.

I'm sure you could modify a Hope V-Twin brake to run both off one cable.

I forgot to mention he needs a hydraulic solution, currently on xtr, but that can change.

One of the links cites the problem if back wheel control so he may need two levers on his right side.

Am sure there must be a way to split the pipe, add a Y splitter in cable and have a valve to moderate the percentage of braking to front/rear... The quantity of fluid to move the pads is minimal so should be quite easy to put something together at a good hardware store

It is possible and there are a couple options.

This is possible using 2 normal hydraulic MTB brakes and I have done it so that it only required 1 finger for both levers. Getting the brake bias can be a pain in the a$$ but it can be done.

Trickstuff is a German company that makes a cable to Hydraulic converter similar to the Hope one.

 

Like the Hope unit above this can be modified to do a similar job by using a single cable brake lever, splitting the cable in 2 and taking it into either side of this unit.

Problem with splitting a hydraulic hose in two is that there is not enough oil being displaced by the lever to operate 2 brakes. Maybe by mixing and matching you might make something work but it will be costly. For example using a single lever for a 4 Pot caliper and connecting it too two 2 pot calipers( Example an Avid trail lever too 2 normal Avid calipers). No idea if it will work though. Good luck.
