I would like to know what do you guys/girls do with your old parts?

Like the tyres that dont have enough grip anymore, or the chains that might be streached and affecting your gear shift efficiency which may cause gear slip or even your cables that might be a bit damaged or colour faded?

What do you do with your old parts that you dont sell on the hub? Even the helmets you might not like anymore because it is 'so 2010' ...

I also wonder what the cycling shops do with the parts they take off your bike when you replace the cassette or or or..

I am asking because I am thinking about starting a community project in the areas where we mostly ride (at 1st the Cradle and if it works I would like to roll it out further).

I have not draughted the complete plan yet, but it something in the line of making the community aware of the dirt/danger on the cycling lane (or area) and asking them to assist to clean (or keep safe) in return for bike parts to maintain their bikes (if the bikes or used for commuting or keeping the kids busy doesnt matter) and a tools station at the local school (or community centre).

I see kids riding without helmets on the cradle and riding all over the road - I would like to make them aware of the safety issues and maybe they can even join some groups on there laps if they have the correct equipment.

SO, what do you do with your old parts?

If you dont repair your bike yourself, will you ask your 'old parts' back from your LBS?

Keep them in a crate for a few years and then eventually throw them away .

Good idea! Mine lies in the garage... in a box mostly... I'll be following with interest to see what comes from this and will gladly donate. Good luck!

Cool, thanks. As soon as I have a few more comments I will think about putting boxes at the security guards that man the parking areas at local riding spots (like Fratellis, trails like Thaba/NF/Van Gallens etc etc) or at LBSs that would like to get involved. Very little effort will be required from the riders (donators).

I collect these old parts from cyclists and build bikes that are donated to les fortunate members of the community on a per-nomination basis. I also use the parts to help the guys fix and maintain their bikes.

I was busy with a PM to you right now :)

I had you in mind from the start. Will explain it all in my PM.

Our main aim is to equip them with the tools, parts (tyres, chains, cables mainly) and knowledge to maintain their own bikes - and in return they might be willing to assist us in keeping the cycling lanes/areas clean and safe.
