This sounds like a lot of fun. anyone entered yet?.

http://www.mtbassault.co.za/

The adventure starts at Marks Park in Emmarentia, rider’s then set off on a cruise over Emmarentia dam using a specially created floating bridge, riders will then show off some real balls while riding through one of Joburg’s most beautiful golf courses and getting wheels wet through miniature rapids. Rolling through storm water drains and venturing into the heart of darkness through a network of tunnels, one nearly a kilometre in length! Under highway bridges and flying over main roads with custom built scaffolding bridges and ramping into vast expanses you never knew existed this course will really show you what Johannesburg has to offer.

Howdy! And we're here on the HUB now!

So, we dropped the word "assault" - too vicious :) But yup, it's going to be as cool as you think. We wanted to share some behind the scenes stuff with HUBbers, going to start a post under Events.

In the mean time, for more info check out

looks like the spruit and then some.

if this means a clean, faeces free ride, I am keen to do it.

Definitely then some. Spruit forms large portions but one of the bigger ideas was to connect some of the JHB City Park areas. Then of course, the "for fun" areas :) Underground tunnel, 120m water crossing, the water stairs (you HAVE heard about the water stairs?!)

I'm not demanding anything.

I dont ride the spruit because it's a **** ride, chances of being hijacked, or riding through some sort of crap, either human or animal is pretty high. Not to mention that if you are to ingest the water, your tottie will definatley fall off.

I make the choice, I did it once and swore never again.

My statement relates to spending 1.5bar on the route, and not cleaning up the crap = money wasted.

like painting a drol in pretty colours....

No one wants anything to fall off. Seriaas.

:P

There's a large portion of the JUMA project that is going to Spruit Rejuvenation and cleanup efforts - and of course, a way to KEEP it clean. We'll be releasing more info on this shortly...

@JUMA The course looks very narrow.. What will the bottle neck situation be like?

When I chatted to Neil (course designer) he said they're releasing people with quite big gaps between them, think seeding is being taken into account as well and there's quite a lot of space at the beginning. Hopefully let everyone get into the right pecking order asap.

Let me get a full answer from him, will post here.

All I know is don't fall in that spruit water.

My son does swimming lessons. Another kid he swims with, her father does a lot of mountain biking.

Him and mates were riding the spruit a couple of months back when one of them fell in and cut his leg and needed stiches.

He went to hospital they cleaned it up and sent him home. A day or two later it got infected and he then spent 3 weeks in hospital where loosing his leg below the knee was by all accounts looking likely but they managed to save it.

This was now 6 weeks back.

Wow that is scary as hell.

Must be some pretty disgusting water in there.

I have had the misfortune of slipping/stepping into the spruit whilst riding a couple of times and counting..... And have had no issues other than wet shoes or kit.... especially no health issues!

This guy cut his leg when he fell in and needed stitches which is why he went to hospital. The infection he picked up was from that water that got into that wound.

It has its days, just depends if the council has kept the sewers from blocking or not. It is pretty stinky some days but it is mostly fine.

Im not saying I would drink it.

Plus the local settlement are performing their cultural rituals every sunday and they keep on coming back for more, clearly we are not seeing the benefits they are.

Righto. Full answer from Neil Evans (the "technical MTB brain behind the course design" - as they call him).

"The first 10-15kms is generally wide and open with numerous overtaking places as each batch settles into riding formation. This is one aspect where the course designers are making a concerted effort to minimize such a possibility."

Hope that answers? 10-15kms should be more than enough to leave me behind so I don't get in your way ;)

I can just see old numb nuts here falling of those floating bridges.

As sure as the good Lord put little green apples on trees.

That's why they have rescue divers!

I have to wonder though (personally) about the efficacies of de-cleating while upside down underwater...

Been there, done that.

Inverted, submerged de-cleating is possible albeit quite embarrassing

I asked a similar message on the JUMA FB page and they said there will be divers and the bridges will be over shallow water; not sure how deep 'shallow' is.
