Hi,

So I've spend spent all my money on a new bike and now I can't put it on our trailer rack because of the through axle. I checked around for prices on a through axle mount for the trailer and it going to cost about R300, which is crazy in my opinion.

I saw this on some on a international site and though for somebody with the know how, it could be pretty simple to make...

I will obviously pay if someone can make it for me.

You have to decide if you want an adaptor to fit a 15mm thru-axle QR to a 9mm skewer type holder or if you want a 15mm QR holder that bolts onto your roofrack/carrier. In SA, Holdfast makes 15mm QR holder but I was recently told by the rep they have been asked not to sell them as they are modifying the design. I have not seen the Thule adapter in stock locally.

Another USA brand to look at is RockyMounts but I think this will be expensive and I don't know if there is a local supplier.

Will not be difficult to make this - I would do it if i had the machinery. Anyone with welding machinery and a lathe can do it. The dimensions for 15mm QR system are available online.

Found this also, although not sure what I would do to improvise to make the base work.

Parts List:

(1) 1/2" diameter, Galvanized pipe "T"

(1) Base / pedestal floor mount

(2) 1/2" diameter Galvanized pipe, 1" in length (you the actual length depends on how tight you wrench it together and how much slop you want.

(1) 1/2" diameter, 2" length (this can vary a few inches depending how high you want it to be, keep it lower for less stress on the part.

(1) Base wood stand (I had a piece of 3/4 plywood (4" wide x 34" long) around so I used that. You could use a 2"x6" if you want. I would keep it at least 36 wide so stays flat on the SUV or truck floor.

(4) 3/4" wood screws

OPTIONAL

(1) Paint (optional)

(1) Fabric (optional, but it sure makes it look nice)

(1) length of 4" wide, 36" long male Velcro

(1) Spray adhesive (optional, used if you decide to cover the base with fabric)

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind either, whichever is cheaper and works. The cheapest I found locally for one with a base that would replace the quick release mount on the trailer was about R350.

I would also make it myself if I had the tools and the know how.

R400, bit pricey.

For a 15mm axle I welded a 15mm galvanised pipe onto a couple of pieces of square tubing and then a piece of 5x30mm flat iron as a foot to bolt to my bakkie, and it works perfectly.

That plan you have seems to be good, all the components would be available at a large hardware store,

Thanks, yeah, is still a bit pricey

go to any engineering workshop, they will make it for you - but might wor out close to R300 anyway

I'm in engineering and R300 is cheap. Any engineering shop will charge you a lot more than that.

Standard 1/2" pipe has inner diameter of 15.8mm so that home-made adapter will be a bit of a loose fit on your finely machined 15mm alloy QR skewer and I suspect will eventually damage it. Considering the time it would take me to buy the bits and get them machined/welded - I would happily pay in the R300 to R400 range for a nicely made holder.
