I want to make my SWB Pajero look mean like these Jeep Wranglers...

How bad is it really to put Mud Terrain tyres on vs All Terrain? Besides the increase in noise what else would I have to contend with?

Do they not last longer tread wise?

Also can my car cope going from a 65 profile to a 70 profile?

MT tyres have less grip on tar, especially in the wet.

They will also probably not last as long as AT.

How much time do you really spend off road?

What is your current wheel size? Is your car Manual or Automatic?

Not true!!

I have maxxis bighorns mt on my fortuner, giving me 90 000km now, and grip like hell rain or wet! They will prob end up giving me 130 000km. Yes the paj will take the 70. but are you increasing the width?

265/65/17 Its an Auto

I try to go offroading once a month atleast. This past weekend I went up Sani Pass and on a plain normal sand road I got a tear in the middle of my tyre so now I want to buy extra ruggered tyres

No sticking to 265 profile so it will lift the car slightly...

Fuel economy decreases substantially.

Mileage on M/T is reduced when riding on tar.

On road handling of wet roads are terrible, thus braking is influenced quite allot.

Deuler A/T's would be my reccomendation.

I currently have Yokohama ATR-S but they wearing fast and in my mind is very soft....

Apparently the cheapy Federal Couragia AT is a fantastic tyre as well to use...

First of all, you need to look at the speed rating of the tyre your are planning to use. Certain Mud Terrain tyres are not rated for highway travelling speeds.

I also own a SWB Pajero, since 2002 they came with automatic transmission in SA, and I have read on the Pajero Owners Club SA that one guy got erratic behaviour from the automatic transmission after changing tyre size. This specific case was a change from 265/70/R16 to 265/75/R16.

AT tyres are very versatile, I have ridden my car in dunes, through very tough and rocky sections and overland trips on standard Cooper AT tyres. So if you are not going to do any serious off road riding, I would suggest that you stick to AT Tyres.

I run MT Hankooks on the Landy and am very happy with them. They grip better than BF Goodrich All Terrains on wet tar (but not as good as a road tyre). In the mud and dirt they are brilliant. They were cheap compared to BFGs and they are lasting well. Have done about 60 000 km on them and at least another 40 000 km left before I'll have to replace them. They work well in the rough stuff and I have had virtually no issues with punctures, and none with side wall damage. They are noisy on tar though and you have to rotate them every 10 000 km or they wear unevenly (every 2nd knobbly) and get even noisier. They look bloody mean, and I like that. Previously I also had Yokohama Geolanders (AT) and threw them away after numerous side wall cuts. BFG ATs lasted forever, about 120 000km rotating 5 tyres, but the tread was so hard, they skidded like snot in the wet on tar. Also the tread broke off in little chunks on rough fast Namibian dirt roads and they got ridiculously expensive. Check out the 4x4 Community Forum, you'll find more tyre info than you can deal with.

I am not for one or the other. Just some experience:

My Current 4x4's

Land Rover: Hankook MT (off road 90% of the time)

Land Cruiser: Michellin MS AT

Suzuki Jimney: BF Goodrich AT

Nissan Plaas bakkie: Gerneral AT

Military Puch: Cooper ST MT. ( off road 90% of the time)

Land Cruiser came with Hankook MT and their grip on tar was crap.

But I put the Hankook MT on the Land Rover because they was cheap at the time, it never see tar and can't go faster than 80km/h

With some Auto Transmissions, If you go to big a size up in tires the Shifting gets erratic.

Happend to my V6 Prado Auto.

But do as you like. It is your car and money and a wonderful free SA.
