There is no doubting that they work better, the point imo is do you really need better brakes?

Just wait untill you hear the "ching ching" rubbing and get air in the system.....

Yes, i need better brakes. None of my mountain bikes are doing the ching ching, I reckon if you dont buy cheap rubbish, you should be fine.

I think the 3 biggest advantages with disk brakes are that they:

1.) Offer better modulation

2.) Work with carbon rims

3.) Probably work better in the wet

I would have liked to add less maintenance, but in reality I'm on my 3rd Groupset over the past 15 years (2nd was replaced due to an accident) and I've yet to replace a break pad. Having said that I ride aluminium rims. From my experience with mountain bikes I suspect we'll spend a fair bit.

Finally, I agree that actual stopping power is not the really the reason for changing, if that was the case they would be bring 203mm rotors to road bikes, which clearly's not happening

No - you are bang on the mark. Discs on a road bike don't just offer better braking, they remove the issue of brake pads being less effective on carbon rims in the wet, overheating etc etc.

Add discs to a set of carbon clinchers with tubeless tyres, and the wheel removal issue also goes away coz punctures become very rare. My buddy rides tubeless in the UK, and hasn't had a flat in over 2,000Km (probably way more than that now). That's heading towards close to the useful life of a fast road tyre, which is a predictable maintenance replacement you can do in the workshop.

Good point wrt to carbon wheels and rim brakes, especially in the wet.......that would be the deal maker if i road with carbon wheels in wet conditions that required good brake control.....but for the average joe who rides a mid to low budget bike without carbon bling in good conditions....

Definitely correct. But from what I've observed, the bikes that we find in shops are a steady trickle down of the high end bikes the Pros ride. The tech is very flash, but probably overkill for most of us average riders. We still buy it anyway - initially for the bling, and later because it's then all that is on sale as the old stuff has been phased out.

Agree with the other guys here, discs are going to take some time to supplant rim brakes on road bikes - just like 11 speed, which is still only slowly coming in, but eventually it'll happen. What would really offend me is when the cheapo makes start putting road discs on Alu rims - I'm sure we'll see some muppet manufacturer doing that though eventually

There are plenty of them allready. Even Specialized do it, you get the secteur, which is the alu Roubaix with discs. Also the commuter bike, the Sirrus has discs on them allready.

Sad - discs on carbon rims make sense to me, Alu rims less so. But I guess if they want to push it as a standard, they'll want one common approach on every model. Personally, I might be tempted with discs but only if they were tubeless as well.

To me they look flippen hot. I love the look of them, some people dont. But ja, definitely the way forward.

Hey how you can get full colour rims without the unsightly rim brake surface
